MAHLE INDUSTRIEFILTRATION NEWSLETTER
MAHLE won the Hartong Trophy at the exhibition Industrial
Processing which took place in Utrecht, the Netherlands on
5 – 8 October 2010. According to the jury we were able to
demonstrate that maximum results can be achieved with a
small stand. The jury’s judgment was based on the stand
design, product presentation, and the stand team.
According to the jury chairman Herman Belkom who is a
live communication specialist MAHLE Industrial Filtration
proves that a company’s exhibition goals can be achieved
by the proper use of color, presentation, and the booth staff.
Herman Belkom said: “The stand team is young, dynamic,
fresh, and radiating drive.”
Hartong Trophy is an initiative of Machevo & Bulk Vereniging
which started as an association of process industry suppliers
in 1952. The trophy is named after the late Mr. F. L. Hartong
who was the chairman of the association and the founder of
the fair Machevo (now Industrial Processing). The trophy is
a sculpture designed by the artist Nico van Lierop and can
be seen at our office in Alkmaar, the Netherlands.
Creating more awareness about MAHLE Industrial Filtration
in the Benelux process industry was one of our major targets
at the exhibition. We believe to have achieved this goal by
generating very positive free publicity.

The product launch folder for the LGA series was distributed
to all sales employees in July, 2010. The feedback received
indicated high levels of satisfaction with the contents and
information:
▪ Introduction
▪ Market potential
▪ Competition
▪ Products
▪ References
▪ Sales documents
The sales/marketing kick-off took place on 08/24/2010, whe-
re the strategy was defined and actions were assigned. In
the first step, we will concentrate on contract manufacturers,
because this is where we see the greatest potential for LGA
in the short term. The newly designed product brochures
for the LGA series provide the customer with targeted infor-
mation about the main distinguishing features of LGA tech-
nology.

2.1 LGA - a high-end product for oil mist separation
2.2 News from the oil mist separation market
Our customers encouraged us time after time regarding the
use of LGAs in the “emulsions” sector (water-soluble cooling
lubricants). Though there was still some uncertainty here,
the successes demonstrate that the LGA with prefilter has
proven itself. The oil content, however, should be 8–10 per-
cent.
With one of our customers, we have developed an LGA
module, which will soon be integrated in the customer’s
system. This was a difficult application that never worked
with previous systems. We have received an order for 10
units of this module. Additional orders have already been
announced for this version.
An LGA series unit was also sold to another customer who
had tested it in advance and has now incorporated it into its
standards after experiencing very good results. Twelve such
systems are currently in use. They will be equipped with our
LGA as required. The customer now wants to test our LGA
in the area of “emulsion applications.” Very good results are
expected here as well, which would secure a further increa-
se in the acceptance of our equipment.
If you have questions about the LGA, please contact our Air
filtration Product Management, Ms. Harisa Arnautovic.
We wish our sales team further success in selling these
units.

MAHLE Industriefiltration presented the new, compact low-
pressure duplex filter Pi 241 at this year’s SMM in Hamburg,
as an extension of the existing, proven series. This series is
designed for a pressure range of up to 40 bar, and is current-
ly available in MAHLE standard nominal sizes of 50 and 80.
Additional nominal sizes up to NG 3000 are being prepared.
The compact design of the Pi 241 also allows the filter to be
installed in confined spaces. Due to the CFD-supported flow
optimization of the components and the generous filter sur-
faces, the pressure loss is minimal even with high-viscosity
media.
The Pi 241 has two filter chambers with one filter element in
each chamber. If the filter element in operation has reached
the end of its useful life, the system can be switched to the
other filter chamber without interrupting operations, and
the used filter element can be replaced from the top in a
service-friendly manner. Change-over is accomplished with
a simple, easy ball valve switch, which allows the chamber
requiring maintenance to be switched off without leaking.
The ball geometry with negative overlap prevents any drop
in volume flow or pressure during the change-over phase,
and provides for parallel flow through both chambers. The
connection design allows direct flange mounting, e.g., to a
gearbox housing, thus eliminating costly pipework.

To monitor the filter elements, an optional differential pres-
sure indicator can be supplied. For customer-specific requi-
rements, the entire range of MAHLE differential pressure
indicators is available with one or two switching levels, LED/
optical-analog displays, various contact types, thermo lock-
out, and connector plugs.
In order to meet international requirements, certifications
are being prepared for all typical marine classification com-
panies, as well as calculations according to ASME rules and
API 614 conforming models.
Applications for this new filter series include hydraulic and
lubricating systems, fuel modules in the automotive industry,
in steel and paper industries, in power plant technology, in
industrial and maritime operations, in rail vehicles, as well as
in general machinery and plant construction.
Together with the original MAHLE Premium Select filter
elements—known for their high dirt-holding capacity and
resulting long service life—and the paper and wire mesh
elements, the Pi 241 offers an optimal solution for a wide
range of filtration applications.
Christian Geyer, Product Management Fluid Technology
Due to very high requirements for material durability and
pressure stability combined with high separation perfor-
mance requirements, MAHLE has further expanded its filt-
ration expertise and developed the topchange PiP TC2 filter
series.
Bag filters are a tested, proven filtration system. If, however,
high separation rates are required, then filter cartridges are
superior.
Thanks to the MAHLE topchange filter element, it is possible
to combine the efficiency of filter cartridges with the advan-
tages of filter bags, while continuing to use the existing bag
filter housing.
The PiP TC2 series includes adapters for bag filter housings
and high-end cartridge filter elements with a defined, high
separation rate.
It is characterized by:
▪ High-efficiency inorganic filter material with
protective nonwoven
▪ Progressive construction with filter material
graded by fineness
▪ High rigidity due to stainless steel wire support matrix
▪ Stainless steel support tube providing high strength
and pressure resistance
▪ High differential pressure stability and dirt-holding
capacity, resulting in optimal operating life and
cost-effectivenesst
▪ Filter ratings to 1 µm absolute
▪ Guaranteed retention efficiency in accordance
with ISO 16889
▪ Maintenance-friendly design

Filter elements for air conditioning and ventilation (Heating,
Ventilating, and Air Conditioning, or HVAC) were recently ad-
ded to the MAHLE EcoParts product range. The portfolio now
includes, specifically, filter cells, pocket filters, and compact
filters, as well as filter mats and accessories.
With special, multilayer filter media, the service life can be
increased by up to 60 %. Optimal configuration of the filters
can also result in energy savings of up to 20 % compared to
typical filters.
An electrically uncharged, synthetic nonwoven is used for
all the elements, which has significant advantages over fi-
berglass media. Water-repelling properties prevent bacterial
growth, so that all elements are also approved for use in food
applications. In contrast to fiberglass media, fibers cannot
work free of the medium and contaminate the clean air side.
Filter cells
MAHLE filter cells are available as standard products in all
typical sizes, and can be equipped with a pleated or flat filter
medium in order to achieve filter classes G2–F9. Pleat sta-
bilization methods ensure that pleat spacing in the filter cells
is defined and pleat blockage is prevented. The frames can
be made of metal, wood, cardboard, or fiber plastic material,
depending on the application and customer requirements.
Bag filters
MAHLE bag filters are available in filter classes G3–F9. De-
pending on the filter class required, a single-layer synthetic
nonwoven or a multilayer composite nonwoven is used.
As standard products, the filters can be designed for each
application and produced with various metal, wood, or plas-
tic frames. Pleat stabilization ensures that the filter medi-
um is used completely and optimally permeated in order to
achieve a moderate increase in differential pressure. This
saves energy costs and extends the service life of the ele-
ments considerably.
Compact filters
MAHLE compact filters are available in a wide range of va-
riants. In addition to the standard class F6–F9 filters, there
are also a HEPA version for classes H10–U17 and special
elements for high volume flow rates and cost-optimized ver-
sions. A tightly pleated, microspun nonwoven is used as the
filter medium.
The compact filters are completely combustible, due to their
fully synthetic design, and feature very high strength.
We look forward to your inquiries!

3.3 MTS 10 system for the Vario 9 filter series
A technical problem that often goes unsolved is the econo-
mically efficient preparation of concentrate from backflush
filters. The MTS 10 system is now available for the Vario 9
filter series, using internal or external pressure sources for
cleaning.
The backflushed concentrate is captured in a dirty tank. Se-
dimentation and reconcentration takes place in this tank via
a filtration stage. Residual drying takes place using a special
worm gear with vacuum, and the liquid is entirely returned
to the system. The solids are transferred to a chip container
in a trickle, and can be fed back into direct use in the best
case. Typical residual moisture, e.g., for aluminum chips, is
less than 12 %.
