! In a spend of two days, running around in the town, traversing the land
in Jinjang Utara with the accompany of my family, it was a journey back to
the rurals, steeped in admiration and excitement. Jinjang Utara is a very old
development, reaching back into the communists days when Malaysians was
still under the rule of the British. Through ages, it has transformed into a small
town with a majority population (90%) of Chinses. Some of the places are still
even remain undeveloped; roads are generally quite narrow and less facilities
offered. I choose to magnifies the locals, human activities, food and building
design which full of colourful cultures. Hence, I’m proud to present my
journey to you, hope to count you in, in the search of bits of Jinjang’s culture.

Porks were chopped into slices by the stall hawker and hanged in
front of the stalls. The atmosphere here smelled a little stench, floors
are accumulated with water everywhere. However, the stall is still
crowded with people, waiting patiently for their turns to choose.

13. After buying fruits, vegetables, meats, what’s next?
Fishes! The stall hawker introduced this type of fish to
me, which is one of the common one. It takes less time to
do the preparations before cooking.

Time to grab a breakfast. Try this fried yam balls which is one of the local famous food. It
tastes best when serve with the specially made sauce. “Crunch!” When I bite on the crispy
outer layers with the filling, the taste of condensed yam paste fill my mouth with satisfaction.

The locals call this place The Three Temples, because three buddhist temples
were built in a row at different years respectively. The designs of each of the
building vary from traditional to modern style.

Each buddhist prayer come here to ignite joss sticks and greet the joss, then, they will place
them in a ash bowl. This is one of the protocol whenever you enter a temple.

A Casual Lunch
Jalan Metro Perdana 3, 52100
If you're looking for some of the best wonton noodle in town; this is the
place, Yong Kee Wantan Mee (Dumpling Noodles Soup). There's different
kinds of meat, wontons, green onions etc, all neatly prepared. On my
table are the various kind of seasonings people can add to make it spicy
or vinegary.!

Then, I go to a Dim Sum restaurant to try on some Bao Zi (Chinese Steamed
Buns). There are wide varieties of flavour with different fillings inside. One of
the favourite one is the Char Siu Bao (Chinese Steamed Pork Buns), filled with
barbecue pork and steamed in the traditional basket for hours. Other flavour
such as red bean, sweetened bean paste, and vegetarian buns are delicious as
well! !

When I pass by the residential areas, I notice an interesting cultures
among the locals; the letter box culture. Apparently, each house has
their own design of letter box placed in front of the gate. Even in this
modern days, some parts in Jinjang area are still undeveloped yet;
hence, different style of the letter box reflects the personality and
economic condition of the owner.

Some of the letter box are handmade by the locals themselves. At one of the double
storey house, the owner creatively recycle a bicycle basket and remake it into a letter
box. For one of the old house built in the 80s, a vintage style letter box is made.

In contradictory, there are some locals with better economic condition
renovated their house into modern design. They use steel made letter box
which matches the style of the house.

28. Along the journey, I see a wooden house in the rural area. The gates are really
rusty and grasses are not trimmed. Even the gate is locked using a rusty chain.

City of Lights
Jalan Rimbunan Raya 1, 52100
Jinjang Utara | 30
32. At 6.30pm, the sun is already dipping behind the horizon, but the daylight still
lingered in the air as though. The road appear to be slippery after raining.
Main transportations in Jinjang are cars, motorcycle, bicycle, and public buses.

The locals started going home, even the poor homeless man;
pushing the collected cartons using a trolley.

At the back alley, passerby walks in quick pace before the heavy
pours. This is the place where stalls for morning market were kept.
