1. The Essay :Bhangra
Bhangra. Yes! Do you know that Bhangra dance is very famous among Malaysians these days?
Bhangra is one of the traditional dance which dance by Punjabis with several types of Punjabi-
style dance.Nowdays,Bhangra dance performed by men and womens in a group for wedding
function. Bhangra dance has it’s own history, musics, dress code and performance.
The earliest developed of Bhangra dance was a folk dance conducted by Punjabis which
originates from the Punjab region of India and Pakistan. In the 1950, a new folkloric dance,
representive of the state of Punjab and composed of glimpse of men’s Punjabi dance styles,
was created and it received the title of Bhangra. By the 1990s, a still new style of dance called
Bhangra was being staged in the Punjabi Diaspora and characterized by a fusion with western
dance styles and the use of prerecorded audio mixes.
Bhangra dance is based on music from a Dhol, folk singing, and the Chimta. The accompanying
songs are small couplets written in the Punjab language called Bolis. Bhangra singers employs
a high, energetic tune of voice.Other than that, the singers sing fiercely and with great pride,
they add nonsensical and random noises to their singing.The people dancing to Bhangra will
yell rases such as Hoi,Hoi, Hoi, Balle, Balle and Chakde for an extended length of about 25
seconds to the music.
The dress code of Bhangra dance, man wear a Chaadra while doing Bhangra. A Chaadra is a
piece of cloth wrapped around the waist. Men also wear a Kurta, which is a long shirt.In
addition, men wear Pagri which is turban to cover their heads. Pag is a turban which is a sign of
pride and honour.Furthermore, women traditional Punjabis dress known as SalwarKameez long
baggy pants tigh at the ankle and a long colourful shirt which is Kameez. Women also wear
Chunnis, colourful pieces of cloth wrapped around the neck. These items are all very colourful
and vibrant which representing the rich rural colours of Punjab.
2. Bhangra was a seasonal dance, and practiced for the festival of Visakhi and to welcome the
coming of spring. During this month, the harvest especially wheat crop,was gradually reaped. It
was after days of harvesting and at Visakhi fairs the Bhangra was performed, as a dance of
men alone. Then, Bhangra competitions have been held in Punjab for many decades. They are
especially associated with college youth festivals.
In conclusion, Bhangra is truly becoming more popular worldwide and people of non-Punjabi
background are listening to and performing Bhangra.. The idea of any dance form is to spread
the message of peace. It can be visualised that the popularity of Bhangra is growing day by day
with more regions to cover. As Malaysia citizens, we must try to learn and get the knowledge
ofBhangra dance.
