3. QUANTIFYING HAPPINESS ISN'T AN EASY
TASK
Researchers at that agency went about it by surveying
thousands of respondents in 155 countries, between 2005
and 2009. Firstly, they asked subjects to reflect on nation
overall satisfaction with their lives, and ranked their answers
using a "life evaluation" score from 1 to 10. Then they asked
questions about how each subject had felt the previous day.
Those answers allowed researchers to score their "daily
experiences"--things like whether they felt well-
rested, respected, free of pain and intellectually engaged.
Subjects that reported high scores were considered "thriving."
The percentage of thriving individuals in each country
determined their rankings.
4. NOT SURPRISINGLY, KAZAKHSTAN

5. Economic prosperity
It appears to be
one of the
strongest
factors that
relates to
overall life
satisfaction. Of
the 10 countries
with the highest
levels of
happiness, nine
have personal
incomes that are
higher than the
OECD average.
Eight of them
have among the
highest
disposable
incomes among
developed
nations.
6. Employment
It is one of the
most obvious
causes of
satisfaction. Of
the 10 countries
with the highest
job satisfaction
rates, nine are
among the 15
with the lowest
long-term
unemployment
rates — the
percentage of the
population that
has been
unemployed for
more than a year.
And that is
simple as the
longer you are
unemployed the
worse it gets.
7. Physical and social well-
being
There are the largest
determinants for
happiness. When it
comes to self-reported
health, eight of the 10
countries have a higher
rate of citizens
reporting good health
than the OECD average
of 70%. All but one
have a higher life
expectancy than the
OECD average of 79.8
years. When it comes
to having a strong
social support
network, seven of the
countries have
among the largest
percentage of
residents reporting
having a friend or
relative they could
rely on in a case of
need.
