2. BRIEF HISTORY OF POWERPIVOT
o PowerPivot’s history started with two internal Microsoft papers
o The first paper introduced the concept of a BI “sandbox,” and the second paper
was about an in-memory BI engine.
o BI applications to be created in a much easier way—in a controlled environment
that would include relational databases, multidimensional databases, and a
reporting tool
o SQL Server 2008 R2 was used as the development cycle for the product that
eventually became PowerPivot.
o PowerPivot for Excel 2010 was released in May 2010
o The Excel 2013 release moved PowerPivot to a BI solution with the introduction
of :
o PowerUpdate
o PowerQuery
o PowerView

SETUP HOSTING?
If I can hosted the data model on SSAS Tabular, I
can:
Build visualizations in smaller workbooks
The visualization and the data model is no longer
tied together
I can provide multiple people access to the data
model and they will be able to build their own
