House at the End of the Street Trailer Analysis

The basic narrative of the story is that a mother and daughter have moved to a
new house and at the end of the street there is a house where to people were
murdered. After the two people have moved in bad things happen to them by the
undead. This is part of the horror genre and would most likely appeal to 15 to 30
year olds and other people who enjoy getting scared. A unique selling point that
makes people want to go and watch the film would be the actress in it. She has
been in popular films previously such as X-Men First Class which to anyone who
has been the movie and enjoyed it would be more likely to go and watch this
movie as it has an actor in that they liked. If a previous movie has someone in it
and the movie did well, the audience will associate the actor as being in good
movies, and vice versa.

The music in the trailer is long and streaky. There is a lot of bass sounds which
makes it very tense for the audience and it is like we are waiting for something
to jump out at us. It also uses silence to add tension and keep the audience on a
cliff hanger waiting for something to come out. This affects the pace of the
trailer, the trailers pace goes speeds up and down as it makes it more interesting
for the audience. This adds tension and it means that what is happening in the
trailer is less predictable. In the slower parts it gives the characters time to
inform the audience about the movie and helps the narrative. These things all
add up to make the trailer scary, and gets the narrative across which
consequently makes the target audience want to see the movie. The camera shots
emphasize this. Using mainly mid shots and close up it makes all the character
emotions come through it also helps to show details in the movie such as a knife
or a small piece of writing. This helps with the narrative and the music keeps the
audience interested and intensifies the things the audience sees in the trailer.

There isn’t a voice over in this trailer, however I think someone purposely chose
this as the characters speak in short bits which allow the audience to connect
with the characters. It gives the sense of realism which makes the story seem
like it could happen which is scarier and makes the audience feel sorry for the
characters when bad things happen to them. This dialogue explains why the two
people are at the house and why there is a ghost there. This dialogue gives the
audience enough information to find out the basic storyline and make the movie
intriguing. However it doesn’t give too much away and ruin the story.

In-between the dialogue and the camera shots there is also intertitles. Small
pieces of information are shown. These are short sentences which are intriguing
for the audience to read, and though it doesn’t have much relevance to the story
it breaks up the scene changes and keeps the audience thinking about the plot.
“Before you experience the fear… You before you know the pain…To witness the
horror…To uncover the truth… You must go back… To where it all began”. At
the end it had the movie title which then abbreviated to hates, and then had a
hash tag in front of it so people could talk about the movie on social networking
sites. This is good for the marketing of the film but it also lets the audience
research the film from a non-bias view.

The trailer also had someone special effect in it. The main effect was that
someone the footage was rewound. This was to show a scene change after
someone had come out of the ground. It also gave the spooky feel to it. It worked
especially well for the dripping tap. The sound of the tap was amplified and then
rewinding footage gave the audience the sense of paranormal activity.

In conclusion I think the Trailer of The House at the End of the Street worked
very well as it gave me clear information on the storyline, without giving too
much away. The music scared me and made me feel uneasy, which is also key in
a trailer/movie. Silence also worked well for the horror genre aspect. The pace
was good as it was a steady pace that got faster and slower keeping me
interested and made me want to analysis what could happen in the movie
therefore making me want to go and see it. I think that it was the right decision
to not use a voiceover man and just have dialogue to explain the narrative. Also
using the text to make the audience concentrate and stay interested. Finally the
special effect were used well to give a scary feature so the trailer and break it up
from just scene to scene. I really liked the trailer and hope to watch the film
shortly in the future.
