DOWNLOADING ILLEGAL MEDIA: THE EFFECTS ON THE MUSIC INDUSTRY/ ECONOMY
Many of you may be thinking: why not download illegal music? It is free, it is convenient, it is cheap and you have one in a million chances of getting caughtThat is right: Why not? Although some people believe that the music industry is actually benefitting from illegal downloads, others believes it is not and Vice versa.
Affects on artists:
BENEFITS TO ARTISTS:“If you love music you will make it anyways”- Nelly Furtado, whose last album hit the double platinum status and sold 6 million copies despite illegal downloading. According to some, a majority of artist’s profit is made from merchandise sale and touring so with not much profit to lose illegal downloading is actually beneficial. If people download an artist’s music, it publicizes it so people will be willing to know the worth and spend money on a ticket to the concert. Downloading music allows you to gain a fan base quickly who will raise their profits through concerts and merchandise.
DRAWBACKS TO ARTISTS:Did you know that according to RIAA 95% of all artists depend on the money they make from tours and CD sales? This means that if you do not buy their CD, they are losing money they are depending on to survive.
“This is great if you're a big artist at the back end of your career with loads of albums to flog to a new audience, but emerging artists don't have this luxury.” – Lily AllenAlthough artists that have already made a good career in music, can afford for some people to download their music illegally, yet the main problem is that it stunts new and up and coming artists.
Since I am not up here to encourage you to do anything, I am just trying to teach you that each of our decisions should have meaning and we must weigh the pros and cons before we can make a good decision.Whether you chose that illegal downloading is stunting the music industry of helping it, think twice before you download illegal music because no matter what, you want your choice to be meaningful.I am sure everyone of you wants your favorite artists to stick around, but the question is, which way do you believe will be more effective in making that happen?
