SLAP Lesions – Tear of Labrum Causing
Shoulder Pain & Weakness
The joint of our shoulder is a type of ball-and-
socket and is anatomically cited to as the gleno-
humeral joint. This joint involves two bony
structures. Injury to the labrum- a part of the
shoulder joint, is called SLAP Lesions or tears. The
shoulder joint is similar to the hip joint; however,
in shoulder joint, the socket is exceptionally thin
and thus intrinsically unsteady. To make balance
for the thin socket, the shoulder joint has a cuff
of cartilage referred as labrum that creates a cup
at the end of the arm bone (humerus) facilitating
it to move smoothly.
SLAP tear is a particular kind of labral tear and it mostly occurs at the point where biceps
muscle tendon slots in on the labrum. This area is vulnerable to injury because it is an area of
comparatively poor vascularity. Some of the common causes of SLAP Lesions include:
Fallonto anextendedhand
Repetitiveoverheadactions
Lifting anyheavyobject
You may also suffer from shoulder pain due to Suprascapular Nerve Compression. Though it is
a less common cause of shoulder pain in patients but is seen mainly in those who are involved
in overhead activities. People who are involved in overhead sports on a regular basis are more
inclined to develop suprascapular neuropathy. Athletes who play sports such as baseball,
volleyball, and tennis are more likely to suffer from shoulder pain since these sports require
skills putting considerable load on the athlete’s shoulder while the upper limb remains in an
overhead or externally rotated position.
Suprascapular Nerve Compression may result in shoulder weakness and possible shoulder pain.
Some of the common symptoms include dull, nonspecific shoulder pain and weakness.
However, most of the times, this condition is not recognized until you experience a major
shoulder muscle weakness or you failrotator cuff rehab.
