4. These bands/artists are all representative OF THE GENRE – AND SUBGENRES – THAT I WOULD LIKE
TO EMULATE AND DISPLAY IN MY MUSIC MAGAZINE. THEY EMBODY TYPICAL VALUES OF INDIE ROCK
ARTISTS/BANDS, IN BOTH THE STYLE OF THEIR MUSIC, THE WAY THEY PRESENT THEMSELVES, AND THEIR
OVERALL FASHION. FURTHERMORE, SOME OF THESE SELECTIONS ACTUALLY DRIFT SLIGHTLY FROM THE
FIXED CONVENTIONS OF INDIE ROCK MUSIC, WITH ARTISTS SUCH AS GRIMES ADVOCATING DARK
WAVE/ELECTRONIC ROCK AND TAME IMPALA DISPLAYING ASPECTS OF PSYCHEDELIC INDIE ROCK.
SUBSEQUENTLY, THE REASON I HAVE INCLUDED THESE OSCILLATING SUBGENRES IS BECAUSE I DO NOT
WANT MY MAGAZINE TO BE FIXED IN TYPICAL INDIE ROCK TRADITIONS, LIKE MOJO OR NME USED TO BE –
ALTHOUGH IT WILL BE LARGELY SO AND ALSO FEATURE A SELECTED VARIETY OF MAINSTREAM INDIE ROCK
BANDS.
AS CAN BE SEEN IN THE SELECTION OF BANDS/ARTISTS SHOWN, the magazine focuses on music both
old, classic, and new and upcoming, ranging from the late 60s with the who all the way up to
2013 with artists such as arcade fire and arctic monkeys. Evidently, i want the magazine to
shown these varieties in both music period and genre in order to attract a larger
readership and expand the parameters of the typical target audience. There will be
interviews with many of these current bands, feature articles and anniversary
celebrations of classic disbanded bands, and a ‘mixed’ section to compliment other, more
discrete subgenres of indie rock, which will feature bjork, grimes, and the
antlers, amongst many others.
