We started with a simple idea
How could we work more efficiently?
• Intel's 91,500 employees work at
164 sites in 62 countries. Project teams
are often spread across the world.
    – Two thirds of Intel teams are virtual
    – 1/5 of Intel employees have remote managers

• We use powerful collaboration tools to
stay connected and help our employees
  be productive when working with
  geographically diverse teams.

But the fact remains, we still have a lot of meetings!

The challenge that is everyone’s challenge
• We conducted a simple and fun study intended
  to improve productivity in meetings.
• We asked participants to do 2 simple things:
    – Could they try to reduce selected meetings by
30 minutes by applying the effective meeting
practices they already knew? This would apply
to both meetings they schedule themselves and
      meetings they attend.
    – Could they tell us about their experience via
      a web survey?

The answer was a resounding “YES”!

Everyone benefits from more effective meetings.

Getting people involved was easy

• Our program required no training and there
  was no bureaucracy or cost.
• Communication was organic – we used
word-of-mouth and internal blogs. One internal
blog received over 12,000 views and many
  comments and ideas.
• Our participants were entered into random
drawings for gift cards and hourglasses.
• We had people from all job functions across the
  company participating.

We used a variety of ways to keep it simple and fun.

The Results were Overwhelmingly Positive
Based on survey respondents, we achieved:

                  Increased Velocity Increased Efficiency
We freed up over 4,500 We project a return of
30-minute meeting 27,000 hours of employee
                     slots per year. work time.

Feedback was consistently positive from our participants.

Our Challenge was Highly
Successful, Effective, and Sustainable
“Great refresher and refocus on effective meetings.
THANK you for this simple but elegant opportunity to
make our Intel work time more productive.”

“The challenge made me conscious of using
                                                                             my meeting times more wisely.”

“I loved this... Simple, to the point and low overhead.”

The reported results were just the tip of the iceberg –
others were also influenced positively by this challenge.
