BBC Radio’s experiment with podcast technology has proven a great success
amongst internet users who can now download radio shows from the BBC web
site directly to their i-pod player. The most popular programme was Chris
Moyles’ Radio One breakfast show, which attracted 395,000 on-line listens
during November, pushing Radio Four’s The Archers into second place for the
first time.
Podcasting is the audio equivalent of video-on-demand, allowing owners of i-
pod and MP3 players to download complete programmes from the internet in a
one-click process, for listening at a later time. For radio fans with busy
schedules, it obviates the need to be sat at a computer to listen to radio
programmes streamed via the internet.
Simon Nelson, controller of BBC Radio & Music Interactive commented:
"We've been surprised and delighted by the demand for downloads. … It
demonstrates the public's appetite for new ways of listening. Of course, we
recognise that we can't offer all programmes in this way, but we look forward to
working with rights holders to explore ways we could learn from developments
like this to drive radio listening forward."
6.2 million users visited BBC Radio web sites in November, a year-on-year
increase of 55%. Half of those visitors used the BBC’s custom Radio Player,
listening live for a total 6.2 million hours and requesting more than seven
million programmes. The classic Radio Four series 'The Hitchhiker’s Guide To
The Galaxy' attracted more than one million online listeners. The BBC
experiment demonstrates the increasing importance of using download
technology to bring radio content to new audiences outside a station’s
terrestrial transmission area.
