Types of Amnesia-
There are two different types of amnesia-
● Retrograde- the ability to retrieve information that was acquired
before a particular date, usually the date of an accident or operation.
● Anterograde- the inability to transfer new information from the short
term store into the long- term store. People with this type of amnesia
cannot remember things for long periods of time.
The two types of amnesia can both occur within one person at the
same time.
Treatment-
● Occupational Therapy- Someone with amnesia will work with an
occupational therapist to learn new information to replace what was
lost, or to use intact memories for a basis for new information.
●
● Technology- people with amnesia find it helpful to use technology,
such as smartphones as they can be programmed to to remind them
about important events or to take medication.
●
● Medication/ supplements- No medication is currently avaliable for
treating most types of amnesia.
● Amnesia involves a lack of thiamin so any treatments includes
replacing this vitamin and providing proper nutrition.
