Why Millennials are Becoming Franchisees
The Entrepreneur’s Source Terry Powell was featured in an article
in Entrepreneur speaking about the new it-group in franchising: Millennials. Just
a mere 10 to 20 years ago, the franchising industry was mostly made up of high-
net-worth individuals or those who were tired of working the corporate America
life and wanted to go out on their own.
3. Why Millennials in Franchising?
However, this demographic is beginning to change as younger, 20-30 year old
entrepreneurial-minded individuals are entering the franchise industry. Although
the economy is slowly continuing to recover, the job market just isn’t recovering
fast enough for these fresh-out-of-college Millennials, making it tougher to find
standard work.
“Obviously, the employment situation for Millennials is not very pleasant,”
founder of The Entrepreneur’s Source Terry Powell told Entrepreneur. “With
limited jobs and a natural drive for independence and stability, [Millennials have
found] franchising an appealing career path.”

the Rise of the Multigenerational Partnership
These fresh Millennials aren’t just entering the franchising alone, but instead they’re choosing to go
into business with their Baby Boomer parents in greater numbers. The Entrepreneur’s Source Terry
Powell spoke to Entrepreneur about this growing trend.
“Many [Millennials] are convincing their parents to invest their 401k in a franchise venture with
them,” Powell noted. “The parent can be an investor, mentor or partner, and bring along the
experience and know-how from their career. It combines the stability and experience of the Baby
Boomers with the drive of the Millennials.”
Although the Millennial generation commonly gets plastered with negative characteristics, some of
these “bad” Millennial characteristics are actually well suited for entrepreneurship, such as a sense
of impatience, their technological reliance and their desire for a better life. These characteristics are
well-suited to be paired with the pragmatism and experience that the Baby Boomer generation
brings to the table. These partnerships may truly be a match made in heaven.
