Magazine Treatment Sheet
1. Design (Detail how your front page will look. Discuss the choice of
masthead and what genre of music your publication will promote.)
My publication will be promoting music that is in the Rock Genre. I
will be including photos of bands that I have taken at shows, extra
information about artists such as album reviews, tour posters and
song lyrics, and the latest news about the Rock Genre. My cover page
is going to have a colour scheme that is not too busy, but makes it
look appealing to potential buyers. I am looking at including two
main colours, alongside Black and White as Pink and Blue are
stereotyped as Boy and Girl colours, so this will make my issue
appeal to both genders. I also want to include a small amount of
yellow, because I found that during my research, Yellow is often used
alongside Pink and Blue, and I think it looks very effective. My
magazine title is Crowd Surf’, I chose this because it is linked with my
genre and I think it is different and unique, this could also draw in
buyers who are interested in my magazine. I have chosen a font from
www.dafont.com that I feel is really effective and will be across the
top of my cover page in order to stand out to the reader. The font also
works with my genre of the magazine, so it all links together.
House style (Discuss the choice house style of your publication.
House style is 'the specific usage and editing conventions followed
by writers and editors to ensure stylistic consistency in a particular
publication or series of publications'. This includes font, colours,
design of contents and page layout.)
Like I briefly mentioned in my first paragraph, I am going to have a
colour scheme that involves two main colours, one colour that is
not main but will be used throughout and two shades, Pink, Blue,
Black and White. I feel that these five colours work well together
and will appeal to people within the Rock Genre because the Pink
and Blue are darker shades and not light. Also, issues of Kerrang
have used Hot Pink, Yellow and Electric Blue in the past together,
and it has looked very effective. Also, having Pink and Blue
together will hopefully make my magazine appeal to both male and
female, because if I only used one of the colours, the issue would
look like it was more aimed at a specific gender and not both. All of
the text in my articles is going to be in caps lock and in the same
font (with the exception of some sub-headings) I am doing this
because I want my magazine to look neat and tidy. Plus, the
writing may be easier to see if it is in capital letters and al in the
2. same font. My page layout is going to be in the style of a
scrapbook/sketchbook, I was inspired greatly by Hammer
Magazine and I think having each page like a different scrapbook
page involves the reader a lot more; because there is more to look
at. I have decided that I am going to use the font ‘Ebrima’ because
it is very clear when in capital letters and I really like the look of it.
Target audience (who would be the target audience for your
product? Give a detailed example of who your target market would
be.)
My target audience for my magazine is Rock Music fans and
between the ages of 14-20. Other rock magazines such as
Kerrang are aimed at people from the ages of 14-35, the reason
mine is only aimed at up to 20 year olds is because I am only quite
young myself, so I know what people my age like and I know what
appeals to them. Also, my scrapbook/sketchbook layout idea may
not appeal to people older so I think my age range is safe. I also
want my magazine to appeal to both male and female to make my
marker more diverse.
Cover information (how much will your publication cost? Will it be
monthly/weekly/bi monthly? How much revenue would you expect
to make?)
I am looking at pricing my publication at £1.20, this is because it is
a brand new publication and I want people to see it, so it shouldn’t
be too expensive. I am also going to have a digital option as well,
this is to keep up with the current technology phase and provide
my magazine to more people around the world. I am looking at my
issue being a monthly thing, this will give me time to make sure
that each issue has as much detail as possible in it and is at a
good enough standard for the readers. And, I would be happy to
just sell at least 100 copies and make £120 at least, I wouldn’t
expect to make much at first, but once the first few issues have
been released, I would hope that my issue attracted some
attention.
Publishing house (which publishing house would print
your magazine and why? Look back at your previous institution
research.)
3. I would want the Bauer Media Group to print my magazine,
because they already have experience with publishing Rock Music
Magazines so I feel that they will know best about them. They also
have a lot of products that could advertise my publication, so not
just magazines, but Radio Stations and Music Channels.
