When it comes to investing for your future it comes as no surprise that risks will be
involved. After all, when it comes to investments risks are part and parcel of that
scenario and will always be there no matter how conservative your investments may be.
Perhaps a risk that affects all investments regardless of what type they are is market
risk. This one is based on events that can drastically affect the market. You’ve probably
seen its effects in recent history.
For example this typically happens when there’s a natural calamity such as an
earthquake or a devastating hurricane. Other events can include such things as a rise in
the inflation rate or for example a cut in the interest rate as set by the Federal Reserve
or whatever government agency sets the national interest rate in your country.
The latter is also an example of political risk. These are things that government does to
affect the market. Other than set rates they can also affect the market by enacting
legislation that may curtail or help a certain industry.
For example, the recent banking industry bail out the US government did affected the
market in a positive way because it helped to support a potential collapse of the banking
industry which would have meant a collapse of all financial markets not just in the
United States but potentially the rest of the world as well.
There’s no sure-fire way to keep the risks away. That being said you can make sure to
lessen their effects by being prudent in your investments so that you can keep your nest
egg relatively safe for when you really need it – your retirement.
