1. Career Investigation Report for AMG Business Administration Automotive Management

Born and raised in Calgary Alberta, with a heritage belonging to Italy and Portugal I have a great
curiosity for different cultures and places which led to a love of travel. With four European trips, three
sailing trips along the British Columbia coast and multiple trips to the United States I feel that I have
gained a greater appreciation for different peoples and cultures. I also enjoy photography and socializing
with others. I believe that socializing is a way of meeting new people and getting to know your friends on
a more in depth level. All of these things I enjoy have allowed me to discover more about myself, but
above all my other interests, the automotive world was always something I knew I loved.
Since I can first remember, I had a passion for automobiles and the automotive industry. From a young
age I would surprise people with my knowledge of different cars and strong positions I was already taking
with brands. In junior high one of the options that I chose was Mechanics and this option has been a part
of my course choices through high school as well. Recently, my mechanics teacher has asked me to help
teach the Grade Nine Mechanics class. My passion really took off at the age of sixteen when I first began
driving and working on my own vehicle. Because of my aptitude and interest, it became my responsibility
to keep the vehicle running. These experiences in my garage and through what I was learning in my
mechanics class, eventually lead me to a job at Cochrane Dodge where I was trained as a lube technician,
and was given my first opportunity to be a working part of the automotive industry. At the age of
seventeen I was actively restoring and modifying my own project car and working at Erol’s Automotive
towards my apprenticeship as a mechanic. At this point I was sure a mechanic was what I wanted to be,
and was confident with it as a career choice. Over the last 12 months in the industry however,it had
become apparent to me I wanted more out of my career then being a mechanic. I wanted to find a way for
my passion to take me further; I wanted to be part of the leadership. When I found the Business
Administration Automotive Management program, I knew it was for me. It will be a perfect blend of
both what I have a passion for and the tools I need to make that passion take off.
The AMG program consists of two years split into five semesters,beginning right after the September
long weekend. During your first year you explore courses such as business mathematics, microeconomics
and marketing fundamentals as well as introduction to automotive technology and concepts of the
automotive industry. These courses will provide me with the basic business and communication tools I
will need and exposure to the automotive world to be successfulduring the work practicum. The work
practicum takes up an entire semester and will tie up everything I will have learned in the first year in the
AMG program. During this time as a student I will get valuable hands on experience in the industry. I
have not attended student for a day, but intent to after the new year. Jobs available will depend on
connections and effort, but can range from junior service advisors, to data entry to sales representatives.
During the second year, I will build on the business skills attained in the first year with courses like
macroeconomics, integrated marketing and finance for managers. In addition I will be able to explore
some additional aspects to business management with the business law and human resource management.

2. The second year of the course also has a larger focus on the Canadian automotive industry and the skillset
to land a job in the automotive industry.
After graduating from the AMG program, a student can get a job anywhere in the industry. If you have a
love for numbers, there are positions available in credit and insurance divisions. There are entry level jobs
in dealerships as well as aftermarket stores which eventually can lead to management, or you have the
tools you need to open your own automotive business. If none of these are what you’re looking for you
can choose to pursue a degree in either automotive management or business administration, which can
land you a variety or entry level and managerial positions within a corporation. With the automotive
industry being a worldwide one, you can find a job anywhere. But some places have more specific jobs
than others. For example, there are far more manufacture positions available in Eastern Canada as
opposed to Western Canada.
After completing this course, I expect to be even more confident and efficient in business applications and
tasks as well as automotive literacy and knowledge which will propel me in the direction I want to go.
Past graduates from this program have varied salaries based on opportunities presented to them and
performance. That being said, according to SAIT’s school of transportation graduate employment survey
I can expect a salary of 40,000 a year to start with lots of room for growth, up to 90,000 annually.
Potential for even higher income exists with a degree,or if you choose to start your own business. In the
coming years the outlook for the jobs available with your AMG is good. It’s a huge, growing industry
with many ways to specialize or broaden your skillset. Even without the automotive side, the business
skills you attain can be valuable to many different types of employers.
