There is a big disconnect between what
people think vs. reality when it comes to
owning and operating a business

Non-Business Owners Perspective
1.You have so much freedom - You’re the
boss
2.Don’t know what to do with all that money
3.You have it so easy as an owner
a.All you do is tell people what to do
b.You don’t actually work
4.Land of total and complete euphoria

Pareto Principle - states that, for many
events, roughly 80% of the effects come
from 20% of the causes
20% of businesses own 80% of an industry
80% of businesses own the remaining 20%

The 20%
Owner
● Owner is typically very wealthy
● Owner has plenty of time to meet
● Company typically does not have much
debt
Company
● Dominates the market and that industry
● Reputation for getting results

The other 80%
Owner
● Owner is stressed out
● Owner is debt (sometimes dangerous
debt)
● Work all kinds of hours (they do
everything)
Company
● Good results when the owner is involved
● Inconsistent in its effectiveness

There is a big disconnect between what
people think vs. reality when it comes to
owning and operating a business

their dreams become their biggest
nightmares

The Entrepreneur
Who is a first generation owner?
● When you started what did you have to
do?

So why are 80%+ business living a
nightmare?
They make a fatal assumption
They assume being great in the technical
work (treating lawns, preventing pests)
means that they will be great at owning
their own business

Think about it, when you open a
company you must not only know the
technical work but also you must know
● Accounting (Taxes, Bookkeeping)
● Human Resources (Hiring, firing, culture)
● Marketing (What works or wastes money)
● Sales (What to say, when, who, how)
● Goals (What am I supposed to do)

You are watching a sports program
You look at yourself and you think:
● OMG -- I’m fat!!!
● How did this happen?
● When did this happen?
That is when the skinny guy comes out….

The Skinny Guy
● Disciplined, organized and no non-sense
● Not very fun
● Sometimes judgemental
The Fat Guy
● A ton of fun
● Loves food, fun and friends
● Not the best at discipline but he has a good time

The Skinny Guy in you is taking charge...
1.Whip you into shape
2.Buy new shoes and workout equipment
3.You start eating healthy
4.You workout extremely hard
You start running

You get results
● Check the scale and you are losing
weight
The skinny guy decides….
● If I double my efforts, double my results
● Double down on your workouts (even
though you are sore)
● Rabbit food is in and you “love” it

Your results on the Skinny Guy Program
● Check the scale and you gained a pound
● You’re committed but surprised
● Something changes… you’re not sure…
but….

● You’re sore, very sore
● You are tired you did not get much sleep
last night
● It is cold in your bedroom
● It is raining outside
Guess who is back?.....

The Fat guy is back
● He is not interested in working out
● He wants to sleep
● He is tired of all of this rabbit food
● He is going to eat today… and eat big!!

I am not making judgements on either
We think that we one person but in fact….
We have multiple personalities within
ourselves

Turns out it is the same in business
We all have the following personalities
1.The Technician
2.The Manager
3.The Entrepreneur

The Technician
● The person who loves to work in the
trade
● Change is a pain, because I cannot do
the work
● Just leave me alone and let me do my
job

The Manager
● Everything has its place
● Structure, structure, structure
● Everyone must follow the rules
● Everyone must follow a “system”

The Entrepreneur
● Can see it all - They have the big picture
● Sees his or her business as one
complete system - and wants to work on
it
● Understands how their company fits in
the marketplace and what needs to be
done to compete

Question #1 - Why does 80% businesses

● Most business owners are technicians
● Most business owners are uncomfortable with
owning and operating a business (because
there is so much to know)
● Most business owners think if they work
harder and stick to what they know they will be
OK

What is the reality?
● Owning a business is very different than
doing the technical work
● To be successful, you must transform to
be an entrepreneur, not a technician

Question #2 - What are the other 20%
business owners doing to be so
successful?

How many people here have kids?
Can anyone explain the first year’s
challenges?
Can anyone explain the tween challenges?
Can anyone explain the teenage
challenges?

Businesses are no different - They have
predictable phases that all go through
1.Infancy
2.Adolescent **
3.Maturity **
**Note: These are not revenue bound.
Even a blind squirrel can find a nut
sometimes

Business Infancy
● All businesses go through this phase
● Everyone loves Raymond
● The owner is the know all and do all
● Low margin
● High engagement
● The business is a dream come true

Business Adolescent (The teenage years)
● Business begins to grow
● Balls begin to drop, cannot manage it all
● Just trying to keep up - Fight fires daily
● Service is inconsistent
● Hire, then fire, then hire, then fire
● Some businesses stay here (and
prematurely kill the owner)
● Most owners don’t see the way out

Business Maturity (The responsible adult)
● Few businesses make it here
● Owners treat their business as the
product
● Highly profitable and predictable
● Systems, checklists and procedures
● Can produce results for customers
consistently
● The owner has time and rests easy

1.They get to maturity as soon as
possible
a.Treat their business as the product
b.They pay the price to create systems so
that the business can be consistent

speaking with my kids)
There is an easy way to operate a business
There is also a hard way

Business the easy way
● Owner spends his or her time on building
a better product (E.g. a better business)
Business the hard way
● Owner spends time doing things (the
technical work) of the business personally
to get things done

Proven over and over again
Successful business owners
work ON their business not IN it

successful?
● They get to maturity as soon as possible
● They understand that they must spend
their time working on the business not
in it

The 4 hour workweek
Does anyone believe that?

My least favorite quote:
“I don’t have any time”
My response:
“You did not make it a priority”

Successful Business Owners
● Understands that the “time” will never
arise
● They make time to “work on” their
business
● They learn from other companies
● They invest in seminars
● They nurture and invest in the
Entrepreneurial personality in themselves

business, not in it
