3. WHAT IS “MONOLOGUE?”
“Monologue” is a one-half hour long television show where contestants compete with one another
for prizes by performing a monologue up to 3 minutes in length. The show consists of a host, 3
judges and 4 contestants. Judges give scores to each performer in 4 different categories. The scores
are totaled and the individual with the highest score wins. Show winners return at a later date to
compete with one another. This continues until a single final winner is crowned. The ultimate
winner is awarded the prizes. The host is responsible for introducing and interviewing the
contestants, describing the monologue to be performed, introducing and talking to the judges
throughout the show, and interacting with the audience.
WHAT IS A MONOLOGUE?
A monologue is defined as: 1. a form of dramatic entertainment, comedic solo, or the like by a single
speaker; 2. a prolonged talk or discourse by a single speaker; 3. any composition, as a poem, in which
a single person speaks alone; 4. a part of a drama in which a single actor speaks alone; 5. A literary,
usually verse composition in which a speaker reveals his or her character, often in relation to a
critical situation or event, in a monologue addressed to the reader or to a presumed listener.
Although a monologue is predominantly a verbal presentation given by a single person featuring a
collection of ideas, often loosely assembled around one or more themes, it may also employ
nonverbal elements, such as, the use of facial expressions and hand gestures, along with a variety of
props and stage devices.
WHAT A MONOLOGUE IS NOT
It is not a singing contest or a comedy skit/routine. Therefore, only the incidental singing/vocalizing
of a song or performance of a comedy routine is allowed, and cannot be greater than 20% of the
duration of the monologue.
THE JUDGE
A judge is an individual with a deep passion for the craft of acting and an active interest in film,
television and theatre. He/she is well-educated in theatrical arts, or has significant experience as an
actor, director, writer, acting teacher or casting director. He/she possess the ability to recognize
talent and are able to give short precise constructive criticism about an actor’s performance using
terms and references pertinent to the acting industry and acting techniques. He/she is also able to
draw from a mental database to compare a contestant’s performance to that of well-known actors
with similar qualities or who played similar roles.
All interviews will be videotaped. Those selected to be a judge, or are considered for further review
will be contacted via email.
Judges must be at least 18 years old. Proof of age must be shown.
Monologue Policies & Procedures, March19, 2012 Page 3
4. The judge’s Interview will consist of watching a short monologue recorded onto DVD in which he/she
will be asked to score using a predefined scoring system in 4 categories (see page 8). Afterwards, the
judge will give a verbal evaluation up to 45 seconds in length of the performance just viewed.
Judges score each act while the performance is in progress and submit their scores to the stage
manager immediately after the performance concludes. The scores are tabulated and given to the
host who will announce the winner.
Judges can expect to spend approximately 5 hours, 1 day a month in the studio.
THE CONTESTANT
Prior acting experience is not required.
All auditions will be videotaped. Those selected to compete, or are considered for further review will
be contacted via email.
During the audition, contestants will be asked to give a one-minute sample of the monologue they
plan to perform. A contestant is allowed to change the monologue should they wish, as long as the
“Contestant’s Form” (see page 14) is completed and turned in at least one day prior to the actual
performance.
An audition does not guarantee an appearance on the show.
Contestants can be any age. However, if younger than 18 and not legally recognized as an
emancipated minor (proof must be shown) a legal guardian must sign ALL forms requiring signatures,
in conjunction with the minor, on the underage contestant’s behalf, acknowledging they are
responsible for the contestant. Original signatures required on the copy submitted to the producer.
Contestants may use props, music, or sound effects to enhance the quality of their performance.
Some items are available in the studio (free of charge). Anything not available in the studio will have
to be provided by the contestant. Props brought in by contestants must be approved for use by the
producer or studio personnel.
Contestants are permitted to bring no more than 2 guests to sit in the audience during the recording
of their show. Contestants are responsible for the actions and behaviors (including the destruction
of any property) of their guests and assume all responsibility.
Audience Members are allowed to express themselves during the recording of a show by clapping,
oohing and aahing, or sighing at a response given by a judge. However, audience members do not
have the right to make unnecessary noises, shout out rude comments, or otherwise disrupt the
recording of the show.
A written/typed copy of your monologue must be given to the director prior to your performance.
If a booked contestant fails to show up and did not cancel (see page 9) his/her appearance at least 1
day before, he/she will not be allowed to participate in any future shows. If a booked contestant is
Monologue Policies & Procedures, March19, 2012 Page 4
5. more than 30 minutes late and does not call (see pages 8 & 9) at least an hour before the show
records, it is the producer’s prerogative whether or not to permit the contestant to perform.
Only original material can be performed, unless the contestant receives prior permission from the
owner of the copyright material to perform it (this includes monologues and scenes from books,
films, plays, or videos). Contestants assume full responsibility for ensuring the material(s) they
perform does not violate any copyright laws.
Any category is allowed, i.e. comedy, drama, parody, tragedy, etc.
Contestants should make some kind of gesture or say something at the end of their performance
that lets the audience/viewer know the performance is over.
Monologues must be at least 1 ½ minutes in length and cannot exceed 3 minutes in length.
A monologue is performed by one person only.
In case of a tie, the producer or an impartial judge selected by the producer will break it.
There is only one winner per show. If for any reason the winner is disqualified, drops out, or is
unavailable to compete further, the individual forfeits the win and the individual with the next
highest score in the episode the winner was victorious in will take his/her place.
THE VOLUNTEER
Prior experience is not required.
Volunteers are individuals that work in a variety of roles behind the scenes, such as: makeup artists,
camera operators, set designers, sketch artists, audio techs, etc.
Volunteers can expect to spend about 5 hours, 1 day a month in the studio. All volunteers assisting
with any production must be a PCAC certified community producer, which requires you taking
approximately 20 hours of free studio training classes. If an individual has prior experience in any of
the areas, it is possible that they can be tested by studio personnel. And, if found proficient, will not
have to undergo the required 20 hours of training.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Anti-Harassment and Anti-Discrimination – the studio is committed to maintaining both a working
and learning environment that is free of discrimination and harassment. Any contestant, judge or
volunteer working in the studio found to have engaged in harassment or discriminatory behavior
shall be subject to suspension, and possibly further sanctions.
Right to Refuse Service – the staff reserves the right to refuse service to any person whose actions
hinder the activities of access producers or staff members. Persons hindering producers or staff will
be asked to leave the facility and will be subject to sanctions.
Monologue Policies & Procedures, March19, 2012 Page 5
6. Any person under the age of eighteen must have a signed letter (see attached forms) from their
parent or legal guardian, stating that the parent or legal guardian assumes all responsibility for any
damages to PCAC equipment or facilities that her/his child or ward/dependent may cause.
PCAC will strongly uphold every individual’s and organization’s right to free speech. Recognizing that
there are many concerns within the Pasadena community, we affirm that this community has the
right to define for itself a “community standard.”
No individual will be denied access to the PCAC facilities on the basis of race, sex, physical disability,
religious or political belief, or the nature of the programming interest.
The only areas prohibited from appearing on the public access channels are those outlined here or as
stated by law. These include ADVERTISING, SOLICITATION FOR FUNDS (except for funds specifically
for PCAC, Inc.), LOTTERIES, OBSCENITY, MATERIALS DEEMED HARMFUL TO MINORS, DEFAMATION
OR LIBEL.
Remember that no form of commercial content is allowed on PCAC channels. Programs may not
mention prices, or invite the viewer to visit a commercial establishment. Programs may not solicit
funds in any way or ask for donations for anything.
No smoking in the facilities.
No food or drink in control rooms or editing rooms.
No long distance telephone calls on studio phones.
No firearms or weapons allowed in facility.
No alcohol or illegal drug use is permitted in/on studio property.
No unauthorized equipment maintenance or disassembly is allowed.
No flammable or hazardous material(s) allowed.
Shows are scheduled to be taped once a month, usually in the evening from 6:00pm – 10:00pm. This
is subject to changed based on studio availability.
While in the studio, cellphones and other electronic devices must be turned off just prior to the
recording of each show and must remain off until recording ends.
No horse-playing is allowed in the studio.
Each person is responsible for keeping the studio clean and picking up after themselves.
Disclosure – To prevent any unfairness or favoritism from occurring, judges must disclose beforehand
if he/she has any kind of relationship with any contestant he/she will be judging. Likewise,
contestants must disclose beforehand if he/she has any kind of relationship with any judge who will
Monologue Policies & Procedures, March19, 2012 Page 6
7. be judging him/her. Depending on the type of relationship, that judge will not be allowed to score
that act, and a substitute judge will be selected to score that contestant’s performance only. In any
case, if any kind of relationship does exist, the judge or contestant can request another judge, and
their wish will automatically be granted. If the disclosure is not made prior to the performance and it
is later determined that a relationship existed, that contestant, if he/she won, will be disqualified
and cannot go on to compete as the winner in the later show(s).
Neither the Producer nor the Studio is responsible for the theft or damage to your personal
property. Therefore, it is recommended that you keep your belongings in a secure area while visiting
the studio, or leave unnecessary items at home.
All shows are pre-recorded and viewed before airing. Therefore, any performance deemed
inappropriate, or not in accordance with the studio’s policies, gives the producer or studio the right
to not air it, or bleep/block out all or parts of that performance.
All those involved in “Monologue” give the show’s producer or his representative authorization to
use their likeness, image or voice in any advertising or marketing for the show using any medium.
After the recording of your show, anyone not participating in the next or later show(s) is asked to
quietly and orderly vacate the studio immediately so the next show can be recorded on time.
All shows can be viewed (usually within 3 weeks) on the internet via PCACs website (see pages 8 & 9)
at scheduled times, shortly after they have been recorded.
All participants must print out and fill-in (as much as possible) the appropriate forms on pages 11
through 16 of this package.
Policies & Procedures are occasionally subject to change.

show.
JUDGING CATEGORIES
Contestants will be judged by 3 individuals on an 11-point (0 – 10) scoring scale in the following
categories:
1. APPEARANCE - does the contestant look and fit the part, .i.e. physiology (age, weight, height,
abnormalities, posture, etc.); sociology (class, occupation, education, etc.); costume and makeup of
the character he or she is portraying?
2. BELIEVABILITY – Is the contestant believable as the character (includes time, place, speech, look,
gestures, actions)?
3. EMOTIONAL IMPACT - does the contestant invoke laughter, tears, sorrow, hope, fear, excitement,
anger, disgust, sadness, joy, hopelessness, etc. in the audience/viewers?
4. ENTERTAINING – does the contestant’s performance draw the audience in? Is it difficult to turn
away from the contestant? Does the audience want to know what comes next, or do they wish this
act will end immediately?
Two points will be deducted from the overall total score after everything is tabulated if a
performance is less than 1 ½ minutes long, goes over 3 minutes, or the singing/comedic routine
exceeds 20% of the duration of the monologue.
SCALE
0 = Not worthy of a comment or score
5 = At least 2 categories are deemed noteworthy, but the other 2 needs a bit of work.
10 = Academy Award Performance
