The document provides appearance standards and suggestions for organizing the staff work area of a library. It outlines general standards such as keeping workstations neat and uncluttered, ensuring computer stations and printers are organized consistently, and clearly labeling all drawers. Specific areas in need of reorganization, such as the board above the red bins and south wall signs, are identified. Additional suggestions include facing all book carts the same direction for ease of sorting, designating a counter area for creating displays, adding remaining volunteer photos, and finding a container for newspaper processing supplies.

Appearance standards for the staff work area
1. Appearance Standards for the staff work area
General Standards:
Each staff workstation is neat, uncluttered and well supplied
- All computer stationswill be organized in the same way and well supplied.
-We suggest that the printers be kept on the right side of the table.
- Kris will be responsible for the supply order list clipboard.
Signs are relevant, up-to-date, easily readable, and placed in
appropriate areas
-Board area above the redbins with uncatalogued books and special handling
seems cluttered with relevant and irrelevant information. We would like to
revamp this area to contain updated information. This may be a good place
for the “Five Signs of Escalating Behavior” and “3 Warning Signals” signs.
- The signage on the south wall corner displays redundant information. We
suggest removing these signs and moving collection codes higher. Elizabeth
Mae wants to enlarge the collection codes signs.
All drawers are labeled clearly for what they contain
Other suggestions for staff work area:
1) We suggest that all book carts face the same direction for ease of sorting
items: handles face out with items’spines facing south. An email containing a
diagram will be sent out to staff.
2. 2) Create a staff work areafor reference staff and volunteers to use when
creating displays/signs. We have discussed this idea with staff. This would be
the counter area next to the copier/printer and laminator.
- Keep the counter clear.
- There would be a supply of colored papers kept in a two-drawer file cabinet
(saves the effort of going to supply closet all the time).
- Other supplies needed by librarians would be kept in another drawer
- The bulletin board would be mounted on the wall above where it currently
resides to free up counter space.
3) There are 17 volunteers. Those whose pictures have not been taken would
have their pictures added to the volunteer area.
4) The four-drawer wood catalogue holder is empty and we no longer have a
need for this piece.
5) We need a box or lid to hold the supplies we use to process newspapers.
