How To Prepare For Your Doctor's Appointment
Asthma is a very serious condition, but if it is managed well, you can still live a fulfilling life. Part of
your management involves playing a role in your own treatment. You can not expect your doctor to
know how you are feeling all the time, and how a medicine works or does not work for you. Your
doctor deals with many patients, but you only have to deal with yourself. Because of this, you are
your own best advocate. Depending on the severity of your asthma, you may end up visiting with your
doctor several times a year, and it is best to show up well prepared for your visits. The following
article gives some advice on what you might want to do before your next doctor's appointment.

Have an open discussion with your doctor. You should talk to him about activities that you can
partake in and those that you should avoid. He may also give you information on things you can do to
lessen the chance of you having an asthma attack. Your doctor should be very knowledgeable about
asthma, so you can talk to him about anything that you want to know.

When you go to your next appointment, bring a friend or family member with you. This will allow you
to have someone else there on your behalf. They may have additional questions and they can listen
to the doctor's information, just in case you miss something. It is always nice to have someone by
your side.

As you deal with asthma, questions or concerns might arise. As you think of these questions or
concerns, jot them down. When you visit with your doctor bring this list with you. You will be able to
talk with him about these things, and having them written down will allow you to recall them easily.

Another list you should bring with you is a list of any medications that you take. It is important for your
asthma doctor to know this information. That way, if he needs to prescribe something new, he can
make sure that it does not cause negative effects when mixed with a medication you already take.

Your doctor may prescribe you a couple different medications to help control your asthma, and it is
important that you know how and when to take each medication. Some you may take every day, and
some you may take if you are experiencing symptoms. For instance, you may be prescribed an
inhaler. Do you know how to use it? Do you know when to use it? How many times a day is too
much? Knowing this information is very important should an emergency arise where you can not get
a hold of your doctor.

If any urgent questions or concerns arise, do not hesitate to contact your doctor. For example, if your
doctor prescribed a medication and it is not working like you think it should, let your doctor know right
away. He can then make a decision as to if he wants you to continue the medication or if he wants to
change it.

By using the advice shared here, you can stay involved in your asthma treatment. Staying involved
allows you to have control over your asthma which allows you to improve your quality of life.
