3. One of the most important moves in basketball
is the layup, yet it also one of the most
neglected during practice. Having several types
of layups at your disposal can make you a
better scorer.
When practicing layups, go at game speed. If
your practice is relaxed or lazy, you will be
prone to game-time mistakes such as shooting
too hard or using the wrong foot. Be sure to use
correct techniques in your practices.
4. Using both hands is essential. If you are driving
down the left side of the floor and shoot with your
right hand, there is a good chance your shot will be
blocked. Use the hand your side of the court
corresponds to, and your body position will help
avoid a blocked shot.
Trying for the same style layup regardless of the
situation will make you easy to defend. For
instance, if a defender is contesting every shot you
take, attempt a head fake and shoot a power layup,
which is further from the basket than usual and
often draws fouls.
