Lake Zurich is located in Lake County Illinois in the northwest suburbs of
Chicago’s metro area. It is named after the large lake contained inside the
village. Lake Zurich was incorporated in 1896 some 60 years after the first
settlers arrived Located about 38 miles northwest of Chicago by road, the
village has Route 12 running northwest through it’s center and Route 22 east
to west.
Lake Zurich has an area of just over 7 square miles, the lake makes up
most of the water area of a half square mile. The z ip code for Lake Zurich
Illinois is 60047 which is shared with nearby Kildeer, Hawthorn Woods and
Long Grove as they share the post office with Lake Zurich.
Lake Zurich was named by Frommer’s as one of the top hundred “Best
Places to Raise Your Family” in 2006 and by U.S. News as one of the “Top Twenty- five Affordable Places to Live in the
Country”.
Lake Zurich’s population in 2010 came in just under 20,000 residents. Housing development started in the 1950′s and
has continued though until today. There isn’t a lot of land left now for further real estate expansion, in the last 5 years or
so it has been mostly town homes. Lake Zurich is another of Chicago- land’s bedroom style communities. It’s well
located for commuters who work in Chicago and also many of the employers located along I- 90 and I- 94 corridors.

Lake Zurich IL real est at e is primarily single family homes on standard
builder lot siz es. Ages range from 60+ years to as young as nearly new.
Recent growth in the village includes some additional medium siz ed town
home neighborhoods. There are very few condos in Lake Zurich. There
are limited luxury homes, for a wider choice buyers look in Kildeer,
Hawthorn Woods, Long Grove and the Barrington areas.
We’ve talked about the ages of homes here so let’s address home styles.
You’ll find ranches, split levels, Colonial, Cape Cod, a few contemporary
and traditional style homes; all products from vinyl sided homes to brick
and stone. It’s pretty diverse in siz e and the siz es offer single family homes
in all price ranges.
Town homes are available in several neighborhoods now with many of them built post year 2000. There are also homes
in the Lake Zurich School district that are actually in the Barrington z ip of 60010. Wynstone is an example where half the
residents attend Lake Zurich Schools and half Barrington. Deer Park has a few too.
While Lake Zurich has a large lake there isn’t a large choice in homes with lake front locations. The majority of the
single family homes are in planned unit developments. Some of the neighborhoods here are quite large, many merge
together with access through from one to another.
2. Housing and Population Statistics
Lake Zurich’s population in 2010 was reported as 19,631 with 5,746
households. The population is spread out. 34.1% are under 18, 5.0% 18 to
24 years old, 34.1% 25 to 44 years old, 21% 45 to 64 years old and 5.9%
over age 65. There are 49.4% males and 50.6% females. The median age
is 35 years. The average household siz e is 3.12 people, the average
family is 3.42 people.
Climate For Lake Z urich Illinois
Lake Zurich enjoys weather similar to much of the suburban area. It’s a little
cooler in winter and a little warmer in Summer than Chicago. Average
summer highs are in the 80′s Fahrenheit and winter lows in the teens.
Snowfall occurs November through March, January seeing the most
accumulations on average. August is the rainiest month although April, May and June are consistently 4 inches a month.
Tornadoes are rare as are earthquakes, there have been a few notable events. Most storm damage occurs from winter
storms and spring floods.
Note-able Employers
Lake Zurich has a commercial location north of Route 22 with several small factory type employers. However the largest
employers in Lake Zurich are the Community School District 95 and some of the large stores like Walmart and Jewel
Osco.

3. Lake County College is a community college for much of the Lake Zurich area, it offers both associate and full 4 year
degrees. and is located in Grayslake about 13 miles north of the village. Students can also choose Harper College in
Palatine. Several 4 year universities can be found in the Schaumburg area with more in Chicago.
Educational Statistics
Degrees – Lake Zurich exceeds the average for Illinois with 33.4% of students attaining a 4 year degree and another
16.3% a Masters Degree. Only 16% stop at high school diploma level with 6.6% not finishing high school.

4. Lake Zurich commuters can use the Metra North Central Service which runs from Antioch Illinois to Union Station in
Chicago. Stations are at Buffalo Grove or Prairie View. Commuting by train to the city takes about an hour. Commuters
can by one way tickets, return tickets, 10 ride tickets or monthly passes. Parking is available.
To drive down town commuters can use Route 53 to reach I- 90 and then direct into the city. An alternate route would be
driving east to pick up I- 94 which merges south into I- 90. Rush hour traffic can mean it might take longer than an hour!
The specified time is 48 minutes. Weather can extend travel times quite a lot.
O’Hare Airport is the nearest and has been known as the biggest airport. It is also reached via I- 90 in about 30 minutes.
O’Hare has direct flights to most states, larger cities and countries due to our central US location and the siz e of the
airport.

Shopping in the old village center has been reduced to a few small stores. The majority of shopping is now located on
Rand Rd aka Route 12. Shoppers come from Lake Zurich and the surrounding Barrington areas and the choices are
almost endless. Big brand stores like Home Depot, Walmart, Target, Costco, Jewel Osco, Kohls, Sears are blended
with hundreds of the smaller stores in several shopping malls. Vernon Hills provides more brand names like JCPenney
and Macy’s. Kildeer and Deer Park shopping malls are close by too.

There’s no shortage of places to eat in Lake Zurich. Whether you want fast food, piz z as, Sushi or a sit down all
American diner you’ll find many of them along Rand Rd. Deer Park also offers choices from well known restaurants
along the same stretch. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all covered with plenty of drive through too.
