Kickstarter: Competitor Analysis

                 By
          Chris Armstrong
Demonstrate my
 knowledge of Python (I also know some R! See Prezume/Cover letter for
    more info)

 Knowledge of Excel
 understanding of marketplace
 analytical capabilities
 Perceived as top player in crowdfunding
  (behind Kickstarter)
Goals:
 Obtain inception to date project data
 From data, draw gain insights of market
  position, audience tendencies, project metrics
 Present findings in a consumable, actionable
  format with recommendations
Extract data from website by creating a script
based on the following methods/tools:
  Python 3.2
  URLLib
  LXML Module
  Regular Expressions
 Over 16,000 rows of data extracted
 Fields extracted:
    ◦ Project title
    ◦ Project category
    ◦ $ Raised
    ◦ % of funding goal reached
    ◦ Time left (for closed projects, time left = 0)
Avg $ contributed to
successful projects, ie most Results Metrics for categories where
                                          its difficult to raise money.
   profitable categories

            Opportunities!
Despite many projects receiving
 funding over $50,000, nearly all
   of them started with funding
targets much less than what they
        ended up receiving.
 Target underserved (yet profitable)
    categories:
    ◦ Sports, Design, Technology, Politics

 The most successful campaigns nearly always
start with modest funding goals. Perhaps
there’s some psychology at play here?
