How does effective
learning take place?
How learning typically takes place…
Learning (behavior change) only takes place when there is a
high degree of emotion and is highly experiential.
Andragogy
is the art & science of teaching adults
You produce emotion in adults by:
• Connecting with their internal motivation
• Determining immediate relevancy
You produce experience for adults by:
• Tapping into their foundational knowledge
• Giving them problems to solve

Shifting the Webinar Paradigm
Base Knowledge / Remembering
Knowledge based items which focus on a new term,
process or skill:
• 1-3 content related items, usually a new term or a new process.
• Make it applicable to the learner…why do they want to know?
• 3-6 minutes in length.
Integration / Analyzing
Integration Based Items focus on:
• Analyze situations which occur in the every day experience in the lives of learners.
• Simulation based and/or checks for understanding of how the knowledge item can be used in a practical
situation. Discussion completed in a whole group or in small group.
• 3-6 minutes in length
Applying what’s been learned
Application requires the learner to express in writing, video or group discussion to:
• Apply the new knowledge or skill to a circumstance they are currently facing.
• Create a new scenario or steps that involves an improvement on their current skill set or knowledge.
• 6-8 minutes in length
Shifting the Webinar Paradigm
By using this new paradigm, we establish the critical
feedback loop to ensure that learning (behavior change) takes place:
• What new knowledge or skill do we want them to implement?
• How will we know if they obtained the knowledge or skill and have implemented it?
• What will we do if they have not learned the knowledge or skill or have not implemented it?
