New figures have shown the BES Utilities team that the number of UK households and businesses that chose to switch energy suppliers reached a record high last year.

2015. Almost 438,000 consumers chose to change suppliers in this one month alone, meaning that
energy supplier switching reached its highest point since November 2013.
Commentingonthe release of thisdata Lawrence Slade,EnergyUK’s chief executive,said: “The two
year high proves people are more engaged with their energy providers and the work industry and
Government are doing to encourage customers to switch has really helped to push numbers up.”
2015 figures
Energy UK has now released switching figures for the whole of 2015. According to news site Utility
Weekly,there wasa rise of 17% on 2014, whenroughly3.2 millionpeople inthe UK changedenergy
providers.Brokendown,thisdatasuggeststhatthe October2015 switchingpeakstoodunchallenged
throughout the rest of the year.
Meanwhile, switching was lowest in January 2015, when just more than 210,000 people changed
energyproviders.Furthermore,energysupplierswitchingregisteredjustabove the monthlyaverage
for the year in December, at 340,000. Interestingly, the Energy UK data shows small and medium-
providers earned a net gain of over 100,000 customers in the last month of 2015.
Finding the best deal
Commenting on these figures, Slade said: “Industry and government have made strides towards
making switching simpler and quicker. Customers have become more engaged in switching and are
shopping around to find the best deal for them.”
Meanwhile Amber Rudd, the secretary of state for energy and climate change,noted: “Government
hasprovidedmore choiceinthe energymarketandthere are now 34energysupplierstochoose from,
whichissignificantlymore thanin2010.” These figuressuggestthatalot of smallerfirmsthroughout
