  • 4. I Don’t Know What Your Goals Are, But . . . I Know MY Story (continued)I don’t know what your goals are, I don’t know what yourdreams are, but I know my story.Everyone has a story and the good news is that we canlearn from it, grow from it, use it to help someone, and mostimportantly help to write its future chapters. My purpose here today is to reenact a portion of my adultlife as it relates to my careers and to BDPA. And yes I said“careers” plural, because while in years past, careerchange was possible, today it is expected! My career in Information Systems began in 1968, backwhen it was called “Data Processing,” and not long after itwas referred to as “Tab” or the “Tabulating Department.”The work area was full of antiques such as keypunchmachines, card sorters, and these things called interpreters, machines that people kept unplugging and plugging wiresinto to get different results. As the only African American in the department in acompany with a less than 5% minority representation, I wasanxious to do well, because it felt as though nearlyeveryone was watching me, and many of them were!I became proficient at COBOL programming, card sorting, and because I could type, I often keypunched my ownprograms, many times running circles around those waiting By Henry Ford - BDPA Cleveland - May be used by any BDPA Chapter - To DOWNLOAD The BDPA Connection in PDF Format, CLICK HERE - Page 4
  • 5. I Don’t Know What Your Goals Are, But . . . I Know MY Story (continued)for someone else to do the upfront work. I was, in my mind,on my way up the corporate ladder.Fast forwarding some 15 plus years, I was still in my mind, onmy way up the corporate ladder (still on the bottom rung, but well compensated). The early 1980’s introduced me totwo life changing realities, one was Reaganomics, theother was BDPA.Just as President Reagan was firing Air Traffic Controllersand setting the stage for turning back worker rights (amove which continues to this day), I was being introducedto an organization which would teach, empower andinspire me through the last half of my first career andlaunch me into a new career. That organization was and isBDPA Cleveland. The results of my joining and becoming involved in theBDPA Cleveland Chapter convinced me that regardless ofwhat happens around you and to you, there is power, purpose and potential in becoming involved in somethingbigger than yourself. By now you are likely asking what Iam referring to, and what are some specifics. When I joined BDPA, I knew how to write COBOL programs, and I assume I could still perform my previous jobs, those ofClerk-Typist and Lift Truck Operator. Despite good pay, andin fact, in part because of good pay, I was a virtual prisoner By Henry Ford - BDPA Cleveland - May be used by any BDPA Chapter - To DOWNLOAD The BDPA Connection in PDF Format, CLICK HERE - Page 5
  • 6. I Don’t Know What Your Goals Are, But . . . I Know MY Story (continued)to my then current employment. My employer kept mebecause I was knowledgeable of my work environmentand relatively cheap, and I kept my employer because Ihad neither the skills nor the belief that I could do anymorethan I was already doing. It was a convenientarrangement that allowed those I worked for to slowlynibble away at benefits, while I became more focused andpre-occupied on my eventual retirement date.So what part did BDPA have in the changes that began tooccur?By becoming a BDPA Member I began to network withothers, thereby expanding my world beyond my workplacecubicle.By performing various functions within BDPA I learned: Marketing Membership Management PublicityBy gaining some proficiency in and realizing an interest inthe above areas, I was encouraged to return to school andobtain a degree in Business & Communications.By attending national conferences I was exposed to others, including Les Brown, who became instrumental in myeventual career change. • 7. I Don’t Know What Your Goals Are, But . . . I Know MY Story (continued)By presenting at national conferences, I gained additionalexposure, allowing me to speak in various parts of thecountry.Because I enjoyed success at speaking, I took the nextlogical step by becoming an author, a step forward madeeasier by the marketing and publicity knowledge gainedas a BDPA Chairperson and in other capacities. In 1994, several years after speaking at BDPA NationalConference Workshops, I released my first book entitledSuccess is YOU, and some time later, released my secondbook entitled The Power of Association. Both booksacknowledge the very important role of BDPA membershipand involvement in my careers and my life.During the years that followed I have spoken in variousparts of the country, and on board cruise ships in both theAtlanta and Pacific. In 2004 I was blessed to share mymessage with an audience in Sydney, Australia, anaudience that included a delegation from China. Thewords of The Power of Association are even shared on thecontinent of Africa, where the United Nations has selectedthe book as a resource manual on volunteerism. Each timeI have an opportunity, I share a relevant part of my story inan attempt to encourage others to join with theorganization that is an integral part of my past, present andfuture. • 8. Where Do We Go From Here? How To Maintain and Improve The Skills ForToday’s Workplace and Gain The Skills ForTomorrow’s Opportunities Continue Education & Training Network With Peers & Others Maximize The Use of Technology Share (Give & Receive) Expertise Remain Knowledgeable and Current of the Rapidly Changing Business World Gain Access to a Knowledge Base of Information System Leaders Become Connected to Top Corporate Leaders and Decision Makers Join and Become Actively Involved in an Organization that has Historically Promoted and Participated in All of The Above! “Today is the tomorrow that you didn’t prepare for yesterday.” By Henry Ford - BDPA Cleveland - May be used by any BDPA Chapter - To DOWNLOAD The BDPA Connection in PDF Format, CLICK HERE - Page 8
  • 9. Where Do We Go From Here? (continued)The Power of SynergismA power that defies mathematical calculationis the power of synergism, where in simplystated terms “One Plus One Equals Three” andin practice, very often it equals even more. Many attempts have been made to describethe near magic phenomenon of synergy, withits ability to take the best from two or moreindividuals and apply the properties ofmultiplication instead of addition. In his book 7 Principles of Highly EffectiveLeadership, author Stephen Covey wrote ofsynergy “It catalyzes, unifies and unleashes thegreatest powers within people.” By Henry Ford - BDPA Cleveland - May be used by any BDPA Chapter - To DOWNLOAD The BDPA Connection in PDF Format, CLICK HERE - Page 9
  • 10. Where Do We Go From Here? (continued)How To Become What You Have Never BeenOver the years I have been blessed to workwith and be exposed to many who inspire byexample. Among those is Lucius Lewis,Cleveland area businessman, entrepreneur, author, speaker, trainer and much more. In hisworkshop series A Better Way of Taking care ofYou, Lucius states that “The challenge is tofocus on your dreams, goals, and objectiveswhile simultaneously remaining open andflexible to new ideas for improvement.”To become what you have never been willmost likely require that you do something youhave never done, such as becoming activelyinvolved in something you have never beeninvolved in.None of us possess the ability to know what liesbeyond our present circumstances. Much of By Henry Ford - BDPA Cleveland - May be used by any BDPA Chapter - To DOWNLOAD The BDPA Connection in PDF Format, CLICK HERE - Page 10
  • 11. Where Do We Go From Here? (continued)my success has blindsided me when I waslooking in another direction for it. The truth isthat preparation, persistence and as LuciusLewis describes “remaining open and flexible tonew ideas” greatly increases the likelihood thatwhen opportunity blindsides you, you will be ina position to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, take your bows, and step into your new foundsuccess.I was not educated to become an InformationSystem Professional. When I entered the field Ididn’t know what a programmer was, but I haddeveloped strong skills in math and logic. I didnot plan to become a speaker. Being in thenineteenth percentile in persuasive ability wasagainst me, but stumbling into a room at aBDPA Conference and hearing Les Brown, convinced me to tell my aptitude to “go sitdown and shut up!” By Henry Ford - BDPA Cleveland - May be used by any BDPA Chapter - To DOWNLOAD The BDPA Connection in PDF Format, CLICK HERE - Page 11
  • 12. Where Do We Go From Here? (continued)The truth is, you have the capacity to becomemore than you ever thought possible, but onlyto the extent that you dare to dream or allownew information and challenges to flow intoyour life.Once again, becoming actively involved insomething greater than yourself will positionyou to receive input from sources put here toinform you, to empower you, to open doors foryou. Despite what loving parents or a matemight have told you, you don’t have all theanswers. Some answers to your unlimited futurelie in that person or opportunity that is just onthe other side of your next obstacle orchallenge! The Importance of Who You May BecomeThe importance of who you may become is tome almost sacred ground. It literally frightens By Henry Ford - BDPA Cleveland - May be used by any BDPA Chapter - To DOWNLOAD The BDPA Connection in PDF Format, CLICK HERE - Page 12
  • 13. Where Do We Go From Here? (continued)me when I venture into this area. It frightensme that my words may fail to impart theimportance of who you may become andwhat it may mean to the world. It frightens methat my words may establish in your mind sometype of “upper limit” that you might settle for asyour ultimate goal. Let me share now thisdisclaimer: I have not a clue to who you mightbecome. Of all that I do not know, this is nearthe top of the list. What I am certain of is thatno one else has that answer either. Yourlimitations are between you and God.With all the challenges of today’s world, I donot have a clue what you can potentially bringto the world. In addition, your importance doesnot have to impact the world in some dramaticand overwhelming fashion. In fact, you onlyneed to touch one life to make a difference. Itmay be written that someone whose life youimpact will be the one to impact many others. • 14. Where Do We Go From Here? (continued)Also, consider that the world called him a poorboy from East 87th and Cedar Avenue, but heanswered to Jesse Owens. The world calledher crippled, but she answered to WilmaRudolph. The world called her a mereseamstress, but she answered to Rosa Parks. The world called him blind, but he answers toStevie Wonder. The world questioned hisreligion and his citizenship, but he answers toPresident Barack Obama. So it doesn’t matter what you are called, itmatters who you answer to. It doesn’t matterwho you are, it matters who you can become. At the risk of being redundant, the bestlikelihood of changing your life and impactingothers is when you embrace education, whenyou seek cutting edge training, when youconnect with others of similar mindsets, whenyou become involved in something bigger thanyourself, when you are challenged by and By Henry Ford - BDPA Cleveland - May be used by any BDPA Chapter - To DOWNLOAD The BDPA Connection in PDF Format, CLICK HERE - Page 14
  • 15. Where Do We Go From Here? (continued)respond to those opportunities disguised asobstacles with your absolute very best! The Wisdom to Understand, The Faith to Believe,The Courage to ActAll things not under our control, those things welike to refer to as circumstances, will happen ornot happen, and they can become ourstumbling blocks or our stepping stones. Noamount of reading, listening or observingsomeone else’s story can move one to action.Everyone writes their own life story based uponwhat they understand, their level of faith, andtheir willingness and courage to act. I haveshared my story with the hope that you will seethe value of my BDPA experience, and be ableto realize possibilities for your career and life.At the time I joined BDPA, the world was not sodependent upon technology as it is today. • 16. Where Do We Go From Here? (continued)the mid 1980’s, except for those working inInformation Systems, knowledge of technologywas a “nice to have.” Today that knowledge, along with the need to be on the cutting edgeof change is no longer “nice to have,” but hasmoved into the category of “painful to dowithout,” and is rapidly approaching “neededin order to survive.”I could write indefinitely sharing examples, but Ibelieve now is your time, a time to considerwhether you believe BDPA involvement canadd value to your career and your life.Certainly you can decide tomorrow, or waituntil the children graduate, or until the weatherbreaks, or until you meet someone who is moresupportive of your goals. The truth is that now isthe time. The truth is that whateveropportunities await you subscribe to the ageold words heard in the game of Hide-n-Seek,“Ready or Not, Here I Come!” By Henry Ford - BDPA Cleveland - May be used by any BDPA Chapter - To DOWNLOAD The BDPA Connection in PDF Format, CLICK HERE - Page 16
