2. TYPICAL MUSIC MAGAZINES
Recently, print sales for all magazines and newspapers have declined due to the increase
in online publications. This means that less people are going to the shop to buy a hard
copy of these as it is easier, cheaper and more convenient to simply read it on the
internet.
Music magazines have always had a fairly specific target market; teenagers and young
adults (up to the age of about 30). This is because these age groups often have the most
disposable income (because most will not have a family or house to fund, and may have
a part time job), as well as the stereotype that younger people are more interested in
music and celebrities and therefore will seek out information about these.
This varies between music genres; for example, Country music magazines will generally
have an older readership that Pop Music magazines.

3. MY MAGAZINE
As I decided to create a magazine which would focus upon the genre
of Indie music, my target audience is older teenagers and young
adults.
Because of this, the magazine would include features which would
appeal to these demographics. For example, festivals are very
popular among the age group of about 17-25 as they are
stereotypically less likely to have responsibilities, are are more likely
to be looking for a fun getaway in the summer after a year of studies
at school, college or university.
Other appealing factors would be albums and CDs, but mainly
technology based features such as Itunes downloads, mobile phone
QR codes etc.
The Indie genre prides itself upon being quirky and original, and
this relates to the target audience as they are of an age where they
may be looking to identify themselves and individual.

4. INSIDE MY MAGAZINE
I ensured that my magazine continuously appealed to the intended target audience by
repeatedly including features which are typical of the Indie genre.
For example, the heading of ‘Gigs and Tours’ would appeal to those readers who have
disposable income and a desire to experience the music for themselves. Indie artists are
the most accessible to fans as they are not hugely famous and therefore gigs are fairly
cheap, and less ‘hyped up’ by the media.
The use of a guitar as the main image for the contents page relates to the fact that most
Indie music is very simple and generally just features a guitar and a singer - no big
productions with special effects, drum kits etc.
My design philosophy was to create a magazine which represented a
scrapbook, and this is the most obvious on the double page spread. The lyrics
within the Indie genre often centre around the recounting of memories and
anecdotes, and this is the reason for my desire to create a magazine which
allows artists to share their own experiences, and readers to feel as though they
are a part of something personal.
The proposed audience for my magazine are of an age which they will be going
through lots of prominent life experiences which they will want to record so
they will be able to relate to this magazine design.
