Talk given at PHP Northwest 2016 (1 hour slot - feedback at https://joind.in/talk/4c43e):
Everyone who calls themselves a “coder” had to start out somewhere. For some of us, that start was in an entirely unrelated field. This talk will bring you along on a young doctor’s joyous journey from the wondrous world of medical academia into the terrifying territory of tech, and the interesting sights seen along the way. We'll reflect on the differences as well as similarities between the medical and technical worlds and the learning process when making the switch from another career to tech. We’ll also discuss practical insights in what makes learning in tech unique and what might make it better, and some “behind the scenes of tech” glimpses that left this newbie coder woefully wishing for blissful ignorance.

82. “Nobody knows anything.
I deal with people in all walks of life,
some of whom should have some idea
of what they’re doing.
And they’re all clueless.
It’s astonishing that any bridges stay
up,or that planes don’t constantly
plummet from the sky.
It’s heartening, in a strange way.”
