  Business	
  for	
  the	
  Beauty	
  Professional	
  
Independent entrepreneurs such as beauty professionals, be they makeup artists, hair stylists,
tanning professionals, spa service providers, or nail salon experts—just to name a few—have a
true need for repeat clientele for a number of reasons. Savvy professionals do this by creating a
congenial rapport with their clients, keeping up with current trends, always being open to input
from the customer, ensuring the client’s comfort,
using quality products, and of course, being skilled at
their trades. Why is repeat business so important to
the beauty professional?
1) Repeat customers make more sense
financially. Repeat customers actually cost
less than new ones. According to marketing
studies, the expenses of advertising, inbound
and outbound marketing, media, and other
ways to attract customers takes a toll on
businesses attempting to find new clientele—
it’s less expensive to simply have repeat
business regularly. In addition, customers who
come back again and again are likely to spend
more money on subsequent visits, and they
often tip more generously as well. That
additional revenue is well worth the effort
professionals expend on making and keeping a
customer satisfied.
2) Repeat customers are great for word-of-
mouth advertising. If you have a satisfied customer, he or she is likely to recommend
you to friends, family, and coworkers, which is good publicity free of charge. Satisfied
customers may also leave positive reviews on sites such as Yelp, which many potential

edge without creating additional overhead.
3) The beauty industry is highly competitive. If you don’t satisfy your customers by
giving them what they want in a skilled, professional, and financially reasonable manner,
you’ll lose that customer to a competitor, very likely permanently. In cities, nail salons
and beauty parlors are a dime a dozen, and if you don’t obtain repeat business, your
business may not survive. Unless you’re the only spot in town for the service you provide
(and even if you are), it is essential that you do your utmost to ensure a good experience
for each and every client.
An additional method for keeping repeat business for your beauty service is to treat loyal
customers as special—offer them occasional discounts and deals or other promotional incentives
to make them feel appreciated. You can always send postcards, emails, or catalogues once in a
while to remind them of your business as well. Lastly, keep your work space clean and up-to-
date—don’t underestimate the powers of an attractive and comfortable environment to keep your
