Schooling in UK
• Schooling is compulsory for everyone in UK up till an age of 16.
• UK follows 2 distinct systems of schooling.
a) For England, Wales & Northern Ireland.
b) For Scotland.
• Basic differences between both the systems is that education in
Scotland is for 12 years whereas in England, Wales and N.I. it is
for 13 years.
• In terms of comparison with Indian qualification
10th standard = GCSE ‘O’ Levels in UK
12th standard = GCE ‘A’ Levels in UK (except Scotland)
• GCSE – General Certificate of Secondary Education.
• GCE – General Certificate of Education
Undergraduate Studies
• Undergraduate degrees can be offered only by universities and
institutes who have received Royal Charter Status by
Government.
• There are more than 3000 course options for students.
• Generally course duration is 3 years in UK (except Scotland).
• Course duration in Scotland is 4 years or more.
• UK has a unique concept of Sandwich courses which allows
students to work for 1 year in between the course.
• UK degrees are highly regarded amongst the employers.

Admission Service)
• The central organization that processes applications for full
time undergraduate courses at UK universities and Colleges.
• It represents 325 universities and colleges (2009)
• Online application form
• Middleman between university and agents/student.
• Student can apply maximum of 5 choices on your application
• Cost :
a) 5 options -> £ 19
b) 1 option -> £ 12
• UCAS has 2 options of ‘Extra‘ and ‘Clearing’ enabling students
to apply late or apply to other universities if they have been
unsuccessful n first 5 applications.
• Deadline: 30th June (15tOct for Oxford & Cambridge)
Entry Requirements
• It depends upon the university but generally:
Year 12(CBSE) – 85% above with similar grades in the
subjects of specialization (e.g. if a student is going for
BEngg Mechanical Engineering then university expects
similar grades in Mathematics & Physics as well).

Year 12(IB Board) - 29-31 (overall)

Year 12(ALevels) – Generally 3 A’s

English – IELTS -6.0 above or 75% in year 12 in English
(e.g. if a student is going for BEngg Mechanical Engineering
then university expects similar grades in Mathematics &
Physics as well).


• On Campus (University Managed Housing)
• Off Campus (Private Housing)
a) Catered: An apartment in which food is provided.
b) Self Catered: an apartment in which guests can
take care of their own meal and laundry needs.

• University assists in finding part time jobs.
After Course Completion
• All the international students who have studied Bachelors,
Masters, Research, PGCE in UK or HND (only from Scotland) are
eligible to apply for 2 years Post Study Work (PSW) visa which
enables them to work anywhere in the UK.

• Average salary for graduates (with no experience) is approx £
22,000 p.a.
• All the universities have a career centre which helps
international students in finding job.
Scholarships
• There are various scholarships offered for Indian students.
Details can be found on university website or

• There are some scholarships offered by Ministry of HRD,
Government of India.
• There are some private organizations like Tata, Sethna, Birla,
Mahindra etc who also offer scholarships/financial aid to the
Indian students.
Health & Welfare
• All international students in UK are entitled to free health care
by NHS (National Health Services).
• All the universities have international welfare office which deals
with the problems of international students.
• Police in UK takes special care of international students and
university areas.
• All the employers in UK should have a license by the
government to offer jobs to international candidates ensuring
that students don’t get trapped with illegitimate employers.

Schooling in UK • Schooling is compulsory for everyone in UK up till an age of 16. • UK follows 2 distinct systems of schooling. a) For England, Wales & Northern Ireland. b) For Scotland. • Basic differences between both the systems is that education in Scotland is for 12 years whereas in England, Wales and N.I. it is for 13 years. • In terms of comparison with Indian qualification 10th standard = GCSE ‘O’ Levels in UK 12th standard = GCE ‘A’ Levels in UK (except Scotland) • GCSE – General Certificate of Secondary Education. • GCE – General Certificate of Education

Undergraduate Studies • Undergraduate degrees can be offered only by universities and institutes who have received Royal Charter Status by Government. • There are more than 3000 course options for students. • Generally course duration is 3 years in UK (except Scotland). • Course duration in Scotland is 4 years or more. • UK has a unique concept of Sandwich courses which allows students to work for 1 year in between the course. • UK degrees are highly regarded amongst the employers.

UCAS (University and Colleges Admission Service) • The central organization that processes applications for full time undergraduate courses at UK universities and Colleges. • It represents 325 universities and colleges (2009) • Online application form • Middleman between university and agents/student. • Student can apply maximum of 5 choices on your application • Cost : a) 5 options -> £ 19 b) 1 option -> £ 12 • UCAS has 2 options of ‘Extra‘ and ‘Clearing’ enabling students to apply late or apply to other universities if they have been unsuccessful n first 5 applications. • Deadline: 30th June (15tOct for Oxford & Cambridge)

Entry Requirements • It depends upon the university but generally: Year 12(CBSE) – 85% above with similar grades in the subjects of specialization (e.g. if a student is going for BEngg Mechanical Engineering then university expects similar grades in Mathematics & Physics as well).  Year 12(IB Board) - 29-31 (overall)  Year 12(ALevels) – Generally 3 A’s  English – IELTS -6.0 above or 75% in year 12 in English (e.g. if a student is going for BEngg Mechanical Engineering then university expects similar grades in Mathematics & Physics as well). 

After Course Completion • All the international students who have studied Bachelors, Masters, Research, PGCE in UK or HND (only from Scotland) are eligible to apply for 2 years Post Study Work (PSW) visa which enables them to work anywhere in the UK. 1 Year 2 Years Study Work • Average salary for graduates (with no experience) is approx £ 22,000 p.a. • All the universities have a career centre which helps international students in finding job.
