where parts are to be installed.
NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool
Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on
Cat®
products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
NOTICE
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.
Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, all parts should be thoroughly cleaned.
Inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement. All disassembly
and all assembly procedures must be performed on a clean work surface and in a clean hydraulic
area. Keep cleaned parts covered and protected at all times.
Note: Prior to assembly, all threads that require sealant must be cleaned with a tap.
Note: O-rings, gaskets, and seals should always be replaced. A used O-ring may not have the
same sealing properties as a new O-ring. Use Tooling (J) during the assembly procedure.
Note: Apply a light film of transmission oil to all components before assembly.

1. Lower the temperature of new bearings (62) and 61. Install new bearings (62) and (61) into
the housing.

2. Invert the housing and install seal (60) into the groove of housing (49).
Note: Size the seal by holding a round object against the seal. Rotate the round object
around the seal, until the seal is flush with the outer diameter of the groove. Take care not to
damage the seal.

6. 3. Install seal (59) into the groove of piston (58).
Note: Size the seal by holding a round object against the seal. Rotate the round object
around the seal, until the seal is flush with the outer diameter of the groove. Take care not to
damage the seal.

4. Install piston (58) into housing (49).

8. 8. Install the washers and bolts (55) to secure the flange of housing (50) to housing (49).
Tighten bolts (55) to a torque of 60 ± 7 N·m (44 ± 5 lb ft).

9. Position coupling (48) on turbine (42). Install allen head screws (54). Tighten allen head
screws (54) to a torque of 60 ± 7 N·m (44 ± 5 lb ft).

10. Raise the temperature of bearing half (53). Install bearing half (53), ring (52), and retaining
ring (51) onto turbine (42).

9. 11. Invert turbine (42) and coupling (48). Install turbine (42) and coupling (48) into housings
(50) and (49).

12. Use a soft faced hammer to install bearing cup half (47) on hub (46). This will secure the
coupling in place during the assembly of the torque converter.

the following components: the gear, the torque converter impeller and the hub.
19. Install allen head screws (35) to secure hub (36) and the gear to torque converter impeller
(34). Tighten allen head screws (35) to a torque of 105 ± 14 N·m (77 ± 10 lb ft).

20. Position torque converter impeller (34) onto the stator and the turbine assemblies. Install
bolts (33). Tighten bolts (33) to a torque of 60 ± 7 N·m (44 ± 5 lb ft).
21. Lower the temperature of bearing race (31). Install bearing race (31) into gear (32).
22. Install retaining ring (30) into the groove of gear (32).

torque of 30 ± 5 N·m (22 ± 4 lb ft).

33. Position flywheel pilot (11) over the O-ring on the housing. Install bolts (10) to secure
flywheel pilot (11). Tighten bolts to a torque of 60 ± 7 N·m (42± 5 lb ft).

Note: Apply Tooling (K) to the outside diameter of the seal prior to installation.
34. Use Tooling (C) to install seal (9) into separator plate (7).

torque converter housing (5) onto the torque converter.
Note: The weight of torque converter housing (5) is approximately 159 kg (350 lb).
39. Install bolts (6) to secure the separator plate in position inside torque converter housing (5).

19. 40. Remove Tooling (B). Install eight allen head screws (4) and the washers in the torque
converter housing. Tighten allen head screws (4) to a torque of 100 ± 20 N·m
(74 ± 15 lb ft).

41. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to retarder (3). Position retarder (3) over the
center shaft of the torque converter. The weight of retarder (3) is approximately 48 kg
(105 lb). Ensure that the bolt holes of retarder (3) are aligned with the bolt holes of the
torque converter housing.

42. Install allen head screws (2) that secure the retarder in position. Tighten allen head screws
(2) to a torque of 12 ± 3 N·m (9 ± 2 lb ft).
43. Install bolts (1) that secure the retarder in position. Tighten bolts (1) to a torque of
55 ± 10 N·m (41 ± 7 lb ft).

a. Connect the torque converter housing to the planetary transmission. Refer to Disassembly
and Assembly, "Torque Converter Housing - Install".

b. Remove the transmission. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Transmission - Remove".
c. Remove the transmission oil filter. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Transmission Oil
Filter - Remove and Install".
d. Remove the bypass valve. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Bypass Valve - Remove
and Install".
e. Remove the transmission oil temperature sensor. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly,
"Temperature Sensor (Transmission Oil) - Remove and Install".
f. Remove the speed sensor. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Speed Sensor
(Transmission) - Remove and Install".
g. Remove the torque converter outlet relief valve. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly,

weight of the transmission and the torque converter is approximately 953 kg (2100 lb).
