Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service
Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

3. Note: The naturally aspirated 3054 marine engine has one piston cooling jet that is located inside
the number one cylinder. The naturally aspirated 3056 marine engine is not equipped with piston
cooling jets.

2. Remove piston cooling jet (2) from the cylinder block.
Note: The engine crankshaft may be rotated in order to access all of the piston cooling jets.
Note: Ensure that the ball moves freely within the valve assembly of the piston cooling jet.
Check that the tube of the piston cooling jet is not damaged.
3. Remove hollow dowel (3) from the cylinder block.
Note: Hollow dowel (3) is used to locate the piston cooling jet.

2. Install valve assembly (1) into the piston cooling jet (2). Tighten the banjo bolt of the valve
assembly (1) to a torque of 20 N·m (15 lb ft).
3. Repeat Steps 1 through 2 for the installation of the remaining piston cooling jets.

7. Use Tooling (A) in order to install piston rings (1) on piston (2) with the following steps.
a. Install the oil control piston ring in the groove that is lowest on the piston. The latch
pin that is on the oil control ring must be inside the ends of the spring.
Note: Ensure that the latch pin that is on the oil control ring is 180 degrees from the
oil control ring gap.
b. Install the intermediate piston ring with the tapered face into the second groove on the
piston. The stamp "TOP" must be toward the top of the piston.
Note: Intermediate piston rings that are new have a green mark which must be on the
left of the piston ring gap when the piston ring is installed.
c. Position the piston ring gaps at 120 degrees away from each other.
d. Install the top piston ring with the barrel face and the molybdenum insert into the top
groove on the piston. The top piston ring has a wedge shape. The stamp "TOP" must
be toward the top of the piston.
Note: Top piston rings that are new have a red mark which must be on the left of the
ring gap when the ring is installed.
End By:
a. Install the pistons and the connecting rods. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Piston and
Connecting Rods - Install".

20. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
1. In order to remove the connecting rod caps, rotate the crankshaft in a clockwise direction
until the piston is at the bottom center position.

2. Remove the nuts and bolts (1) from the connecting rod (2).
3. Remove connecting rod cap (3) and the lower connecting rod bearing together from
connecting rod (2).
Note: Check the location for each connecting rod cap on the crankshaft. Each connecting
rod cap must have a number that is identical to the number that is on the connecting rod. Do
not mix the bearings.
4. Carefully push the connecting rod into the cylinder liner. The connecting rod may need to
be rotated in order to prevent contact with the piston cooling jet. Remove upper connecting
rod bearing (4).
5. Repeat Steps 1 through 4 for the remaining connecting rod bearings.

22. 1. Clean upper connecting rod bearing (4) and lubricate the bearing face with clean engine oil.
2. Clean lower connecting rod cap (3) and the lower connecting rod bearing. Lubricate the
bearing face with clean engine oil.
Note: Align the tabs on the connecting rod bearings with the tab grooves in the connecting
rod.
3. Pull the connecting rod into position against the crankshaft. The connecting rod may need to
be rotated in order to prevent contact with the piston cooling jet.
4. Install connecting rod cap (3) and the lower connecting rod bearing together in connecting
rod (2).
5. Install bolts (1) and the nuts in the connecting rod (2). Tighten bolts (1) to a torque of
155 N·m (114 lb ft). Tighten the nuts to a torque of 125 N·m (92 lb ft).
6. Repeat Steps 1 through 5 for the remaining connecting rod bearings.
End By:
a. Install the engine oil relief valve. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Relief
Valve - Remove and Install".
b. Install the engine oil pan. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Pan - Remove

24. Removal of the bolts is not possible with a socket. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine
Oil Pump - Remove".
1. Remove all necessary components in order to gain access to the specific main bearing cap.
2. Make sure that the main bearing cap is marked for the location and direction for installation.
The main bearings and the main bearing caps must be installed in the same location.

3. Remove two bolts (1) and main bearing cap (2).

bearing and the main bearing cap together for proper installation.

5. Push upper main bearing (4) from the opposite side of the bearing tab with a suitable tool.
Carefully rotate the crankshaft while you push on the bearing. Remove upper main bearing
(4) from the cylinder block. Keep the upper bearing halves together in order to ensure
proper installation.
6. Repeat Steps 1 through 5 for the remaining main bearings.

1. Clean upper main bearing (4) and lubricate the bearing surface with clean engine oil.
Note: Ensure that the upper halves of the main bearings are installed so that the bearing tabs
fit into the notch in the cylinder block.
NOTICE
Only the upper half of the main bearing has lubrication holes. Make
sure the upper half of the main bearing is installed correctly in the
cylinder block to ensure proper lubrication.
2. Slide upper main bearing (4) into position between the crankshaft journal and the cylinder
block.

3. Clean main bearing cap (2) and lower main bearing (3). Lubricate the bearing surface of
lower main bearing (3) with clean engine oil.
Note: Ensure that the lower halves of the main bearings are installed so that the bearing tabs

28. 4. Install lower main bearing (3) in main bearing cap (2).

5. Make sure that the bearing tabs on both halves of the main bearings are located on the same
side. Install main bearing caps (2).
6. Lubricate the threads of bolts (1) with clean engine oil.
7. Install bolts (1). Tighten bolts (1) to a torque of 250 N·m (185 lb ft). Use Tooling (A) to
tighten the bolts for the front main bearing cap.
8. Repeat Steps 1 through 7 for the remaining main bearings.
9. Rotate the crankshaft in order to ensure that the crankshaft turns freely.

10. Check the crankshaft end play. Use a prybar to move the crankshaft toward the rear of the
engine. Install Tooling (B) and zero the dial indicator. Move the crankshaft with the prybar
toward the front of the engine. Measure the crankshaft end play. The maximum permissible
crankshaft end play is 0.51 mm (0.020 inch).
Note: If the crankshaft was not removed for the rear main bearing removal, the following
components must be installed: bridge assembly, rear oil seal housing, flywheel housing and
flywheel.

Removal Procedure
Start By:
a. Remove the fuel injection pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fuel Injection Pump
- Remove".
b. Remove the engine oil pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Pump -
Remove".
c. Remove the front housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Housing (Front) -
Remove".
d. Remove the flywheel housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Flywheel Housing -
Remove and Install".
e. Remove the housing for the crankshaft rear seal. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly,
"Crankshaft Rear Seal - Remove".

identification mark. The identification marks should give the location and the direction of

3. Remove main bearing cap bolts (3).
4. Remove main bearing caps (4) from the cylinder block.
5. Remove the lower main bearings and the lower thrust washers. Keep the lower main
bearings with the respective main bearing cap.

Note: The connecting rod caps are held on the connecting rod with bolts that are threaded
into the connecting rod.
6. Remove bolts (5) from the connecting rods.
7. Remove connecting rod caps (6) from the connecting rods.
8. Remove the bearings from connecting rod caps (6). Keep the connecting rod bearings with
the respective connecting rod cap.
NOTICE
Do not allow the connecting rods to strike the piston cooling jets.
Damage or misalignment may occur.
9. Push the piston assemblies into the cylinder bores.

34. 11. Lift crankshaft (7) out of the cylinder block. The weight of the crankshaft is approximately
39 kg (85 lb). Do not scratch any of the finished surfaces on the crankshaft.
