2. Back pain is one of the most common ailments. Most people will
experience back pain at least once during their lives. It is one of the most
common reasons people go to the doctor or miss work.
However, there are measures you can take to prevent or lessen most back
pain occurrences. If preventative methods fail, simple home treatment and
proper body mechanics can often heal your back within a relatively short
time, and keep it functional for the long run. Rarely is surgery needed to
treat back pain.
There are factors that increase your risk of developing back pain, and if
possible, should be avoided, and these are:
Smoking
Obesity
Older age
Being female
Physically strenuous work
Sedentary work

though the pain may take several weeks to disappear completely, there

Runs down one or both legs, and…especially if it extends below your knee
If you have weakness, numbness or tingling in one or both legs
If bowel or bladder problems occur
Is associated with pain or throbbing in your abdomen, or if you are running
a fever
Is preceded by a fall, or blow to your back or other injury
Is accompanied by sudden, unexplained weight loss
Also, see your doctor if your back problem occurs for the first time after age
50, or if there is a history of cancer, osteoporosis, steroid use, drug or
