tarting with $1100 from savings
and a handful of products,
Honolulu Pharmacist Richard
Weinstein began going door
to door calling on pharmacies,
hospitals, physicians and clinics. In 1984,
the pharmaceutical market was dominated
by large brand name companies selling
brand name drugs. Richard realized that
there was an opportunity to distribute
generic drugs at huge cost savings when
compared to the brand product. The
pharmacy where Richard had worked did
stock some generic drugs but they were
being sourced from distributors of generic
drugs, not the actual manufacturer of the
generic drug, so Richard contacted the actual
manufacturer and shortly thereafter flew
from Honolulu to New York to meet with the
company principals of several generic drug
manufacturers and tour their manufacturing
facilities.
The result was R. Weinstein
Pharmaceuticals being the first distributor
in Hawaii to sell generic drugs purchased
directly from the actual manufacturer.
Longs Drugs, Queen’s Medical Center
and Kaiser Permanente were some of R.
Weinstein’s early customers as well as many
private physicians. By 1986, R. Weinstein’s
growing pharmaceutical business surpassed
$1,100,000 for the first time.
