4. Generations of Indigo
The term “Ajrak”, derived from „Azrakh‟ the Arabic word for indigo, a blue plant which
thrived in the arid ecology of Kachchh. It was given as a gift for the festival of Eid, for
bridegrooms, and for other special occasions.

5. Traditionally, Ajrak is the name of a block printed cloth with deep crimson red and
indigo blue background.

6. The traditional craft of ajrakh uses only natural colors (vegetable dyes) for its
making. The usual colors of the craft are red, yellow, blue and black.

7. However green and some other secondary
colors are also used now-a-days.
