The results of the 2014 EU Elections, that sharply revealed the voices of separatist movements echoing across the EU countries and the spread of populism and euro-scepticism in many layers of our societies, oblige us to ponder over the value of European Citizenship today and to explore the citizens’ shared identity within the context of a renewed democratic participation in Europe. The current panorama of EU projects concerning EU Citizenship is rich and diverse, spanning from the Europe for Citizens Programme to the valuable initiatives of numerous NGOs active on advocacy of citizens’ rights in the EU. Yet, what is precisely the meaning of being a European Citizen today? Despite the crisis affecting the EU, how do citizens view EU citizenship and what do they really expect from it? What is the role of civil society in the achievement of a strong European democracy? I am pleased to invite you to debate with us those key issues about the future of Europe at the upcoming event: Citizen Matters.
