The Pipestone Vet Clinic was started in 1944 in Pipestone, MN by Drs. Schweim and Pinkert and has been growing ever since. We now have the combined expertise of 27 Veterinarians for all species including swine, bovine, sheep, equine, and companion animal and have three clinic locations which are located in Pipestone, MN, Independence, IA, and Ottumwa, IA.
In 2013, the clinic changed their brand and name to Pipestone Veterinary Services, also referred to as PVS. PVS is an industry leader in bio-security protocols and testing. Pipestone Applied Research, which is an industry leader in animal health research, also falls under the PVS brand. Pipestone Applied Research has most recently been recognized for their contributions to PEDv research.
Pipestone today has 3 PhD level veterinarians and 2 DVMās with masters degress.
Pipestone veterinarians have been identified by their peers for many distinguished awards. The sheep industry has recognized Dr. Kennedy for his outsanding expertise and service to the industry repeatedly. Dr.. Gordon Spronk, Dr. Barry Kerkaert, and Dr. Scott Dee are all swine veterinarians on the Pipestone team that have been identified as Swine Practitioners of the Year by the AASV. These awards are only a few of those that have been awarded to our distinguished team of veterinarians ā the backbone of our veterinary clinic.
The clients of the Pipestone Veterinary Clinic truly number in the thousands. We are only as good as the clients we serve and since our inception we have been blessed with many great clients.
In 1988, the swine industry was changing rapidly and the clients and owners of the Pipestone Veterinary Clinic realize that they needed to change or they would not survive. Livestock production, specifically swine was moving indoors and sow farms were getting larger to be more efficient. These industry changes combined with the willingness to āsieze the opporutnityā were the catalyst for the establishment of the Pipestone System. The Pipestone system started in 1988 with one- 600 sow farm. The ownership of this management company was the same as the Veterinary Clinic.
The Pipestone System is a unique method for sow farm management; in fact, it is the largest, multiple family owned farrow to finish system in the world. Farmers own the sow farm as a way to secure a source of weaned pigs and Pipestone manages the sow farm to deliver large groups of healthy pigs. The Pipestone Company has provided key management services to these family owners that have allowed them to adapt technology and continue to operate their diverse farming operations. Many shareholders receive these weaned pigs in their own wean to finish barns. The Pipestone System manages 40+ sow barns with over 170,000 sows in farms located in Minnesota, Iowa, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Missouri. As of 2014, they are the 6th largest hog producer in the U.S. based upon number of sows. The System is growing and adding managed barns every year, and it takes each and every one of you to manage and run these barns as effectively as we do.
Pipestone System is ranked as 7th largest in 2012 and in 2014 we expect to be 5th largest in the United States. The size of our pig production company is not the most important measure ā but it is one way to communicate our success. Ultimately we measure our success by that of our shareholders. If our shareholders are successful only then can we be also.
Pipestone Grow Finish, known as PGF, was started the winter of 2005. Pipestone Grow Finish offers a variety of services that teach pig caretakers how to start pigs on feed during the nursery stage, maximize performance potential during the growing stage, and assist with marketing pigs to the packer.Ā These services include nutrition, health management, production management, production information and production analysis. Currently, Pipestone Grow Finish manages over 250,000 pigs, records data for over 625,000 pigs and the nutrition program serves over 1 million pigs.
Pipestone Transport, LLC stemmed as a new company from the Pipestone Vet Clinic as a part of sow farm management.Ā As bio-security became more of a focus on the sow farm management side, the need for a trucking company that shared the same ideas, beliefs and values as the farms and its shareholders was needed.Ā In 2013, Pipestone Transport, LLC became its own entity within the Pipestone family brand.Ā Pipestone Transport currently transports wean and cull loads for 20 sow farms.Ā In 2014 alone, Pipestone Transport transported over 1.5 million wean pigs and 24,000 culls.Ā Traveling just over 470,000 miles. Ā Pipestone Transport also operates and manages itās own bio-secure truck wash, washing 250+ trailers a month.Ā Pipestone Transport will continue to explore options for growth in the future.
Pipestone International Management, or PIM, was established in 2009 and is located in Shanghai, China. Much like Pipestone System in the U.S., Pipestone International provides a variety of management, consulting, and veterinary advisory services to China based clients. PIM has over 25,000 sows under management and construction. PIM is viewed as an industry leader in China for Western-style livestock production process and management services.
Big Stone Marketing was established in 2009 to assist swine producers in 3 key areas. First is packer contracts. Finding a place to harvest market hogs is an important final step for farrow to finish family farmers. The price they receive can be the difference between surviving and not surviving the swine business. Big Stone assists producers with risk management due to extreme volatility in the prices of corn, soybeans and hogs. Big Stone will also help producers verify that the pigs they raise are safe pork for consumers. These verification steps are an important part of providing consumers with confidence about the pork we produce.
We have covered the brands we operate today ā now letās focus a little deeper on who we are.
Now that weāve had a chance to review all of the PIPESTONE business units, its time to discuss what really ties all of these companies together. From the day the Pipestone Vet Clinic was founded, to present day, to tomorrow, there is one mission that has kept our company continually moving animal care forward, with ācareā being the key attribute.
Most companies today identify a mission statement. Pipestone has modified these statements over the years and today we have two statements that capture well what we want to accomplish with our companies. In other words our shared business purpose.
Pipestone. Advancing Animal Care Every Day.
This positioning statement speaks to the āPipestone Way,ā which is to seek continual improvement, every day.
It distinguishes our work, and the results we achieve, from other veterinary services.
It serves as a reminder to never relax or relinquish our position as a leader.
And it applies to all business units today, as well as our future endeavors.
We believe our mission statement starts with the oath our veterinarian owners take when they are licensed. The mission continues through our team members that are deeply committed to animal care and husbandry.
The Pipestone System mission statement is āHelping Farmers Today creat the farms of tomorrowā. The mission to help or assist farmers originates with many of our current owners that have roots in farming. Many owners and team members within Pipestone are āfarm kidsā from multiple generation farm families that believe deeply in promoting that way of life for future generations. The farm family life is one filled with hard work, strong values, deep faith, and respect for all. That leads us to values.END
Values are an important element of any successful company. Pipestone has identified 5 key words to convey our values in business. Integrity is doing the right thing even when no-one else is looking. Integrity is something that is constantly tested and takes wisdom to live each day, but also humility to recognize when we fall short. Without integrity there cannot be trust and without trust we cannot be successful.
Our core value of caring conveys our desire to care for the people on our team and the animals in our stewardship. Pipestone shows it cares in many ways including our commitment to providing affordable health insurance to all employees, our assistance to team members in catastrophic \ life changing situations, and family oriented work environments. Caring as a core value is also about the animals we work with. Many people in society today do not understand the relationship that Pipestone team members have with the livestock in our care. Caring for animals is a tremendously enriching aspect of life that our team members can enjoy almost every day.
Commitment. Pipestone is committed to being the best at what we do. If we are participating in an area of business we strive to be the best. At Pipestone, we strive to always improve and never be satisfied.
Growth. Pipestone believes we are either āgreen and growing or brown and dieingā. This applies to us as individuals and our company. Growth is essential for us to continue to be successful. Pipestone believes that growth of individuals starts with a passion for learning. many of our current owners, team members and clients are lifelong learns that have changed to survive and propser. Businesses that grow present opportunities to team members. People that grow present themselves and those around them a better life.
Teamwork. This core value is self expanatory ā we each achieve more working together.
These core values are important and we ask that all team members or our company be able to recite them and more importantly that we all strive to live them each day.
