What's the disease that doctors miss the most? Here's a hint: Symptoms include weight gain, foggy
thinking and fatigue. It's thyroid disease, says Dr. Mehmet Oz, and he explained the importance of
diagnosing it and solving it for weight loss and health on his Jan. 1 talk show.
Understanding your thyroid's role: A small gland in your neck, your thyroid helps your body balance
hormone production, says Dr. Oz. One of its key roles: Managing your metabolism.
And here's the issue that some face: Even if you have a laboratory test and are told your numbers
are within the "normal" range, you can still have thyroid issues that can cause some of these
symptoms:
Weight gain: If during the past three months, you've accumulated 10 or more pounds, talk with your
doctor.
Problems concentrating (brain fog): Feeling unusually forgetful? Brain fog can be one of the
symptoms.
Feeling tired: If you're constantly fatigued, consult your doctor to see if your thyroid might be the
culprit.
Cold: Baby, it's cold outside...all the time. If you always feel chilled, that can be a symptom.
What to do: It's important to talk with your doctor and emphasize the symptoms that might indicate
thyroid problems. Avoid most over-the-counter thyroid supplements, as some of these can be

In addition, the "Dr. Oz Show" suggests that certain changes cold hands thyroid in your diet and
lifestyle may help:
Make sure to get enough iodine. Good sources include dairy foods like yogurt, seaweed and shellfish.
Be cautious about eating too many foods in the goitrogens category. These chemicals lower thyroid
function. Included in this category are cabbage, cauliflower, turnips, peanuts and peaches.
Exercise regularly.
Get enough selenium by nibbling on Brazil thyroid and cold hands nuts and sunflower seeds.
