The cycle of abuse describes the pattern of behaviors that occur in abusive relationships. Abusive relationships are characterized by a cycle of tension building, an abusive incident, and a period of reconciliation or "honeymoon" phase. The abuser maintains power and control over their victim through the use of various tactics of abuse including isolation, intimidation, emotional abuse, economic abuse, coercion and threats, and physical and/or sexual violence.
