1. Religious observance
A bookstore experiences a sudden increase in business, and
asks all staff to work on Saturdays. John, who is Jewish,
says that he cannot break the Sabbath and asks to be
excused Saturday shifts.
The bookstore does try to accommodate John's request but
is a small business with only a few members of staff and is
unable to do so. John is told he must work Saturdays too.
2. Age restriction
A delivery company set an age restriction for applicants,
stating they must be over 25 to apply for a job. This can be
justified as driving is involved in the job and drivers must be
over 25 for insurance purposes.
3. Stating early on Wednesdays
A school might introduce a rule that all staff (not just
teachers) should be in school an hour earlier on Wednesday
mornings to undertake training.
This rule could discriminate indirectly against women who
are mothers who take their own children to school before
coming into work. Unless of course the employer can justify
the timing of the training, because otherwise it would disrupt
the routine for the whole school.
