10. How Ganeshji wrote the Mahabharata
Ganesh was chosen by Narad to be the stenographer to
write down the Mahabharata for posterity, while Vyasji
related the tale to him. Ganeshji used his broken tusk to
write it down. His only condition was that he would only
write it if Vyasji gave the dictation continuously and did
not stop or hesitate and waste his time. Mother Parvati
asked Ganeshji’s to use his buddhi while writing and
explain certain points so that the generations to come
understood the meaning of the great epic. That is the
reason why Saraswati the goddess of learning, is
worshipped after Ganeshji.
11. Why does Ganeshji have one tusk?
There was a time when only seven people in
the world were immortal - Hanumanji,
Vibhishan, Kripacharya, Parshuram,
Ashwathama, Bali, and Ved Vyas - Markande
also joined their ranks later. They do not die
and are not born again. Ganeshji wanted to
be called immortality. Parsuram lost his
temper and invited him for a fight. “You can
be immortal, only if you win,” he said. A
terrible battle ensued in which Parshuram
broke Ganeshji's teeth. Ganeshji gave up the
idea of being immortal. Since that day, he is
born in the beginning when the world is
created and dies only when the world comes
to an end.
