An inside look:
Building an enclosed,
harsh environment UPS

Challenge:
Our customer needed a 550 kVA UPS to use in
underground tunnels and that could handle extreme
temperatures (up to 50°C).
Solution:
A dust-tight enclosure with special filtration to house a Power
Xpert 9395 UPS module. For fast installation, the UPS and
enclosure arrived pre-wired and mounted on a skid.

A 550 kVA UPS usually ships in multiple
pieces. Because this one needed an air-
tight enclosure that couldn’t be added
in the field, we designed a skid base and
mounted it to a wood pallet for shipping.

We bolted the UPS to the skid, giving
it a sturdy and elevated foundation.

This also allowed the UPS and enclosure to
stay as one unit throughout construction,
shipping and installation.

With the UPS in place, we
framed the enclosure,
leaving room for a fan
chamber to help regulate the
unit’s internal temperature.

Building the UPS on a skid and adding the
enclosure made it hard to add holes and
conduit during installation. We decided to
route everything through the top of the unit.

Placing color-coded cam-lok connectors (based
on the voltage environment) on top made the unit
even easier to install—and kept the dust out.

We added a louvered
chimney so exhaust could
escape without allowing in
metallic dust that could
render the UPS useless.
The air intake
included four filters
to help remove as
many particulates
as possible.

By doing all the internal wiring and testing at
the factory, the customer only had to remove
the unit from the pallet upon arrival and use
the cam-loks to connect it to a power source.

The end result? An
industrial grade, harsh
environment UPS that
was easy to install and
met the customer’s
requirements.

For further ease-of-
use and to prevent
accidental exposure
to environmental
contaminants, the
UPS display was
moved to the
enclosure’s front door
and a weather-proof
cover placed over the
service port.
