What is a Destination Wedding?
A destination wedding, or DW, is any wedding that’s held away from the area in which the couple currently lives.
So technically speaking, a wedding in a different city or state is a DW.
I had the kind of wedding most people think of when they hear the words destination wedding. My husband, Ken, and I had five young children (my three and his two) to consider so we turned our DW into a family vacation at a resort in Mexico!
On the other hand, there are plenty of brides who are not living at “home” because they are in school, traveled for a job, or even followed the love of their life to another city or state … but they’d still like to get married “back home.” This is also classified as a destination wedding.

9. If you and your fiancé are the
outdoorsy adventure types, a
church wedding might be
uncomfortable, but a small
ceremony with a few good
friends at a mountain base
camp, may be perfect.
10. Likewise, if you’re someone who
likes to be pampered, base camp
wouldn’t make sense, but an
intimate ceremony at resort in
the Bahamas might be your cup
of tea (or should we say
champagne).
12. A quick word of warning: If
you’re considering a DW for the
sole purpose of trying to save a
buck, don’t be fooled.
13. Yes, you can manage a DW on a
tight budget but keep in mind
price tags can run just as steep as
traditional weddings, plus, there
will be every bit as much
planning if not more.
14. Remember, a DW isn’t just a
wedding it’s a vacation (or travel)
and wedding rolled into one. In
some ways it’s twice the
planning, but I think they’re
twice the fun!

not a destination wedding is
