African American students are disproportionately represented in special education programs compared to their peers. Possible reasons for this overrepresentation include racial biases that result in the misdiagnosis of learning or behavioral issues for African American children. Educators must work to address unfair practices and ensure special education assessments and placements are free of racial discrimination.
