Lewis and Clark's expedition explored the newly acquired Louisiana Purchase lands, strengthening the US claim to the Oregon Territory. They gained extensive knowledge of the American West's geography by discovering over 100 new plant and animal species, but also found no direct water route across the continent. Their journey helped open diplomatic relations with Native American tribes.
