Semyon Dezhnev was a 17th century Russian explorer and mariner who was one of the first Europeans to sail through the Bering Strait from the Pacific Ocean into the Arctic Ocean. He explored and mapped parts of northeastern Siberia and Alaska, making him a pioneering pathfinder and traveler. Some monuments and memorials have been erected in Russia to honor his historic voyages of discovery.
