-Designed to integrate Flex Slot form factor battery backup power across the HP portfolio of server and storage products.
-Ability to connect multiple battery backup Modules to be paralleled in rack configuration.
-The HP Battery Backup is managed by iLO management tool; HP iLO Management
Embedded management for the full server lifecycle
HP iLO Management is a complete set of embedded management features supporting the
full lifecycle of the server—from initial deployment through ongoing management to service
alerting and support. By delivering comprehensive embedded management, HP iLO helps you
speed time-to-deployment, maximize server and application availability through proactive
notification, and dramatically accelerate time-to-resolution when issues arise.
Licensing provides additional HP iLO functionality, such as graphical remote console, multi-user
collaboration, and video record/playback, along with many advanced features.
the Flex Slot BBU monitors the server power and provides up to 750W for 60 seconds in the event of a power outage. The length of holdup time is a function of the load, so if the server is pulling 375W, for example, then the expected run time would be about 5 minutes.
Another feature of the Flex Slot BBU is that if power goes away, but returns after a brief time, the Module will terminate the discharge mode of the BBU after incoming power has stabilized. This saves battery capacity in the event of a back-to-back outage.
the clear advantage of using the Flex Slot BBU: server hold-up with no rack penalty. This allows a customer to grow their data center without having to consider the associated rack level or room level UPS implications. For this solution to be attractive to a customer, the cost of the Flex Slot BBU must be near the cost of a Flex Slot power supply. This is another area where we utilized technology to keep the costs as low as possible on the Flex Slot BBU – we avoided some of the cost of the traditional circuits.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:
The new solution is founded upon Flex-20 technology, based upon HP’s popular Flex-10 foundation enabling network convergence seamlessly
Flex-20 not only doubles performance while providing flexible bandwidth provisioning, but delivers the convergence, cost reduction and management customers needs for today’s needs
Flex-20 also enables streaming full 10GbE and 8Gb Storage simultaneously over a single port, a first in the industry as well
TRANSITION:
With 20Gb innovation, HP is the first in the industry to enable more bandwidth to servers, again. HP developed VC Flex-20, Flex-10 and FlexFabric technology to provide more connections options that greatly improve BladeSystem value for our customers by reducing components, converging effectively and simplifying operations further with more flexibility.
BACKGROUND/SUBSTANTIATION
Industry first Flex-20 technology is HP‘s 20Gb adapters streaming converged 10GbE and 8Gb storage simultaneously over a 20Gb port. HP internal analysis: prior 10Gb FlexNIC (CNA) implementations were limited partitioning 10Gb into one 8/4Gb FC and multiple GbE physical functions or as a single 10GbE (no FC or bandwidth for other PFs). 20Gb ports can be partitioned into a full-rate 10Gb Ethernet AND a full-rate 8Gb FCoE, with increased additional bandwidth remaining for other functions, provisioned in 100Mbps increments.
Density: 140 single socket servers in a 42U rack
Manageability: Rack level management at chassis, server and power level
Efficiency: Pooled power up to 6 chassis (depending on max power and configurations)
Serviceability: Front serviceable with rear network I/O module
Flexibility: Multiple trays to supporting various workloads:
Server trays (1P or 2P), storage trays (10 SFF or 4 LFF), and accelerator tray

[Source: HP internal research - Based on weighted average performance projections for workloads such as web serving, memcached, and Data Analytics. Cost estimates include infrastructure, space, and power and cooling costs over three years.]
The industry standard server industry has designed general purpose x86 servers which are targeted at broad markets and 1,000’s of applications. HP is the most successful server vendor in the history of the industry. Being in this leadership position allows HP to see and hear customer feedback & requirements, observe emerging market needs and marry that with technology inflection points that will significantly change the economics of owning an HP server.
HP has listened to customers whose business is their IT. These customers demand that HP servers yield their business a competitive advantage in versus the competition. The comprehensive TCO models tracked by HP customers show HP design teams that by focusing on specific applications and use cases, HP can optimize server designs to deliver significant economic advantages. Of course when purchasing HP, the savings are not limited to the servers; out of the box manageability, data center infrastructure, real estate, services, etc. add up to significant savings.
IT equipment density may not help if the data center that is severely power and/or cooling limited. High efficiency data centers can gain add an incremental savings by increasing the server density by 80% over standard 1U rackmount servers. This directly contributes to the application service instances per square feet when deploying software defined servers.
Because of the dense integrated design of servers, switches, storage, shared power and fans, the cost benefits of HP Moonshot add up to 77% when compared to 1U servers. Racks, cables, switches and over provisioned power and cooling, are some (but not all) examples of the cost benefits of the HP Moonshot architecture.
The rising cost of energy and impact of energy to the net profits of an IT business makes energy efficiency a primary driver to the software defined server. With components like CPUs in standard x86 servers achieving up to 135 watts (and down to 60 watts), software defined servers whose total power consumption is less than 19 watts have a significant impact to the energy component of OpEx. The 89% energy costs are server energy savings and do not take into account the data center infrastructure costs, to things like chiller, HVACs, UPSs, transformers and power distribution systems.
We’ve all seen the physical cabling complexity of ethernet cables. Add to that the power distribution cables and think of how you might service a hot plug power supply or fan…or remove a server to servicing. The 97% lower complexity associated with cabling has reoccuring time and labor savings, since the complexity of interconnects is managed by the embedded management, not spreadsheets and visual inspections.
