- PRESENTATION BEST PRACTICES This is the title of my deck or presentation and I'll make it my first slide. Next we’ll look for an image that may fit this title. You can search Haiku Deck's vast selection of images that pulls from over 35 million Creative Commons licensed images. Select an image that fits your presentation and it will populate the background of your slide.
- This slide introduces the web-based presentation application we are using and their slogan. In edit mode I can click on the 'set background' icon on the left-hand side of the screen and from there I can choose a solid color to display with my slide. If you want to learn more about functions within Haiku Deck, while in edit mode you can click on the question mark located in the top, right-hand side of the screen. It will display the various editing functions that are available. Click anywhere else on the screen to exit back to edit mode. *some best practice concepts used in this deck are adopted from Haiku Deck's presentation gallery.
- To begin, let's highlight our first best practice concept: Build around ONE BIG IDEA Craft your presentation around one big, memorable idea.
- Next, remember to: Stick to THREE KEY POINTS. That's not three key points per slide--it's three key points, period.
- Think about: ONE IDEA PER SLIDE Focus on one idea per slide. Haiku Deck deliberately limits the amount of text you can put on a slide to encourage this.
- Remember: KEEP IT SIMPLE NOT TOO MANY WORDS Keep words to a minimum. Some experts have rules about how many words to include on a slide. Up to six words is plenty- too many more than that is probably overdoing it. The point of your slides is not to duplicate exactly what you're going to say. It's to reinforce, illustrate, and deepen your message.
- USE PICTURES TO TELL STORIES Pictures should tell stories, not necessarily be used for decoration. Haiku Deck's keyword search yields over 35 million free, high-quality, Creative Commons images and a million premium images from Getty Images. You can also create a chart within Haiku Deck or import your own images. The key is to use your images for true storytelling power, not just as embellishment.
- THE LOOK MATTERS Let your story inspire your look. You don’t have to stick to a default template. Haiku Deck is nice because of the simple yet extensive range of stylish themes that you can experiment with. Themes include integrated fonts, image filters, and color palettes that can change the look and mood of your story. Be creative but also remember to KEEP FORMATTING CONSISTENT! Focus on your story and your message.

- SHARE Haiku Deck makes it easy to share your presentation via links, email or social media. You can also get embed codes for Wordpress, Libguides or websites. You may also export your Haiku Deck as a PowerPoint (.PPT) or pdf (.PDF) for offline use. Additionally, you can share your Haiku Deck on Slideshare (slideshare.net) and embed it on Moodle. When you share and/or export your presentation, slides with images used from within the Haiku Deck app will display the title and author (if given) and the Creative Commons licencing associated with each image.
