Once there lived a king who had fought many battles and won.
Unfortunately, in his last battle he was badly wounded. The
king was saved, but in that battle, he lost one eye and one leg.
The king was very intelligent and kind. Everyone in his
kingdom lived a happy and a healthy life because of him.
从前有一位国王，他打过很多仗并且取得了胜利。不幸的是，他在最后一场
战斗中受了重伤。 国王得救了，但在那场战斗中他失去了一只眼睛和一条
腿。国王非常聪明而且仁慈。 他的王国里的每个人都因为他而过着幸福健

One day, the king was walking through his palace hallway. He saw
the portraits of his ancestors. The portrait of all his ancestors were
very beautiful. Their valor and beauty were reflected in those
portraits. The king thought to himself, “One day, my children will
walk in the same hallway and remember all the ancestors through
these portraits.” But the king, till then, did not have his portrait
painted to be hung on the hallway.
一天，国王走过他的宫殿走廊。 他看到了他祖先的画像。 他所有祖先

This was because the king had one eye and one leg missing.
He was worried and not sure about how the painting of
himself would turn out…without an eye and a leg.
Nevertheless, the king invited many famous painters from all
over his kingdom to the palace court. Many painters soon
arrived at the place.

The king then announced to all the painters, “I want a beautiful portrait of
myself to be painted. It will be placed at the hallway of my palace so that
my children, grandchildren and my future generations can see and admire
the portrait.
Any painter who can carry out this task should come forward. He will be
handsomely rewarded based on how the painting turns out.”

All the painters and other people who heard the king’s
announcement were curious and were nervously thinking, “How
can any painter make the king’s portrait beautiful…the king is
physical disabled with a missing eye and a missing leg? What if the
king does not like the painting? He will get angry. In such a
situation, he can even impose the death penalty on the painter.”
听到国王宣布的消息，所有画家和其他人都感到好奇，紧张地想：“哪

Well, as expected, there was no painter who came forward.
There was silence in the court. The king and all the ministers
were waiting in anticipation for any painter to step forward
and accept the task.
After some time, a clever and brave painter came forward. He
told the king, “My Lord, I will make your portrait.”

Everyone in the palace court looked at the painter anxiously They felt
that this poor painter would be killed in vain. The painter asked the king
for a week to complete the task of painting the king’s portrait. The king
happily agreed.
After a week, finally the day came when the painter had to bring the
portrait to the king to be hung at the palace hallway. The whole court
was crowded with people. Everyone was curious to see how the painter
would make a beautiful painting of a king with a missing eye and a
missing leg.
宫廷里的所有人都焦急的看着画师，他们觉得这个可怜的画师会白白被杀了。 画家

However, when the painter presented the portrait, everyone in the
court including the king was left stunned. The painter had painted a
portrait in which the king was sitting on the horse showing a side
view. His real leg and real eye were shown beautifully. And the
king was holding a bow and arrow ready to shoot …he was aiming
(at a target) with the eye closed.
然而，当画家展示这幅肖像时，包括国王在内的宫廷里的所有人都惊呆

It was a wonderful portrait. The king was very pleased to see that
the painter had made a most beautiful portrait by cleverly hiding the
king's disabilities. The whole assembly of people gave the clever
painter a big applause.
The happy king bestowed honors on the painter and presented him
with great rewards.
And so, the painter lived happily for the rest of his life. His clever
creative thinking had paid off.
