What is
Krampusnacht?
On Krampusnacht,
December 5th, men dressed
as Krampus drink a bunch of
alcohol, run through the
streets, and frighten
children. Often, they chase
delinquent children around
and hit them with sticks.
Pre-Christian Tradition
Krampusnacht is a centuries-old
tradition celebrated in Germany and
Alpine regions, including Austria, Bavaria,
Hungary, Slovenia, and the Czech
Republic.
Krampusnacht, meaning Krampus Night,
is celebrated annually on December 5.
This is the night before the Feast of St
Nicholas, the patron saint of children,
sailors, and various groups
How is Krampus Celebrated?
On Krampusnacht, children leave a boot outside
their bedroom door. The next day, they’ll find
either a reward for being good, or a rod, which
means they’ve been bad.
In parts of Europe, including Austria, the Czech
Republic, Germany, Hungary, and Slovenia, adults
take part in Krampuslauf, which means Krampus
Run.
Krampus
Krampusnacht is a celebration of the devil Krampus, who is
believed to be a creature that is half-man, half-goat. He is
depicted as being hairy with large horns, a goat’s cloven
hooves, red eyes, and fangs.
While the origins of the Krampus are unclear, the idea of a
horned demonic entity is pre-Christian. Such a pagan entity
may have been absorbed into the seasonal traditions to
become part of the celebrations leading up to Christmas.
